I am forming a coin club on the North Shore of Long Island

I have a site at a local high school which will lend me space for one night a month, Monday thru Friday.

Is there preferred day of the work week to have a club meeting? Any ideas?

I plan on having a bourse hour for the last hour of our meetings, too.

Wednesday's are a favorite but "Dallas" will cause a lot of no shows. Good luck in your project

My local club meets on Thursdays. Monday and Thursday have football now. A lot of holidays fall on Mondays so it might be harder to get access. Day of the month also matters, because of the winter holidays. If you launch a club that meets late in the month, November & December might be wash outs.

Keep in mind security precautions, especially if you plan on selling coins at the meeting. Do not compile a list of addresses that becomes available to all attendees. Even photos on a website can be touchy.

It would be helpful if you could be sure to count on at least two other people. That will help with security, opening, closing, putting away chairs and tables and the like. With a new club, if a beginner shows up and there is no critical mass, they are almost sure to quit.

    Good luck.
  • I thought Dallas left years ago and I hate football,so Mondays,Wednesdays, and Thursdays would be just fine. And any of the other 4 days as well.

    That's my old stomping grounds.
    The Three Village area anyway.

"I plan on having a bourse hour for the last hour of our meetings, too."

You might want to consider a club policy/bylaw of adjourning the meeting before opening a bourse. Especially if business is being conducted in N.Y. State by vendors (club members) who aren't planning on or aren't authorized to collect sales tax. The stateys in N.Y. have a very watchful eye these days in that matter.

    Nassau or Suffolk?

Wednesdays would work well for me. Good luck pulling it together.

  • Our club meetings have been on Mondays for ever other clubs in the state meet on Mondays
or on Wed. The meeting starts at 7 pm but people start gathering at 5:30 to have a home
cooked meal, which they pay for and the show, tell and sell with the meeting starting at 7 with
club reports and announcements next. Afterwards there is a scheduled program given by a club
member mostly or a special guest. Then there is an auction with as many as 40 or more lots.
If you leave before the auction you're out by 8:15 and the auction takes about another hour what
with the paying and getting your money. All in all a full evening and a FUN one. There is also an early
YN meeting before the main meeting.

It will be in Nassau County in the Glen Head/Sea Cliff area

Wednesday might work for me as well.

I am very excited about bringing a new coin club to the area and I think there is a niche for it.

It will be called the Gold Coast Coin Club since this area of Long Island is in the heart of Gold Coast, a name made popular from F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby"

I am listening to all of your suggestions and trying to incorporate them into my logistics, e.g. what time I am allowed to hold the meeting in the high school, for example.

Please don't hesitate to contact me by PM with your questions and suggestions.

    More to come...
  • I'm in the area and would be interested.
