Rare Coin?

I am looking to write an article about a rare coin. However I don't know which one to write about.

What coin would you guys like to see an article on?

I am looking forward to hearing your opinions.

Thanks

    1854 florin, 1854 half sovereign, 1854 shilling, 1854 6d.

Nice year for small gold and silver. Does the half sov exist?
Nobody seems to have seen one.

  • Thank you for the response. I think I am going to go with the 1854 Gothic Florin Coin really really nice.

Did anyone here hit the BIN on the 1854 florin that was offered over on ebay.co.uk in the last few days?

    Not I, brown cow...Ooops, sorry...

    Link, or picture?

Given the prices fetched by the 1850 shillings at DNW, what on Earth would an GEF+ 1854 florin??? Ouch!

Yea, good luck on that one. I think that might go 20k pounds!
Best I've seen is a GEF with some PL surfaces, def. NOT mint.

Och, it's hidden with 50 other wax-sealed envelopes containing Victorian gems in a mahogany secretary somewhere near Berwick-upon-Tweed.

There's also two 1844 halfpennys in the batch ensconced in silver-lined brass shells.........................CHERRY RED THEY ARE!!!!!

Make that an 1844 and an 1845, and I'd be even more interested.

    Hi Wybrit

I sold the 1854 florin your refereed to and no where did i refer to the coin being EF or Near EF i never mentioned EF at all, with your reference to the coin you insinuated the seller was over grading the coin this was not the case

The coin was graded by NGC VF35 and for one of these was a decent VF which is the grade i gave the coin,

For all other members i have another 2 1854 florins i will consider selling, one in fine and another about the same grade as the one i sold Nice VF

if anybody is interested in one and would like some pictures you can contact me at www.ukcoinage.com

Buska, not to speak for Wybrit but much of the discussion was centered about higher grade 1854 florins in GEF and better. Nice coin you had there for sale.

Hello 7jaguars, yes sorry i understand you was only discussing G/EF 1854 florin, i was just a bit annoyed at those comments i read

Back to your original discussion i have only ever seen one 1854 Florin in G/EF they are exceptionally rare in EF or better i did offer a substantial amount of money for the coin but the owner just said it wasn't for sale, cant say i blame him not sure i would sell it either if it was mine,

The 1854 Half sovereign does not exist as far as i know i have never seen one or heard of anybody having one,

Good luck with your collecting in the future

Happy Christmas to all & a merry new year

    Thanks for your words buska.

There is an 1854 florin at
AU50 in the books at PCGS, and I have seen it - GEF is fair even if usually these numerically grade higher.
IMO this coin deserves much more recognition and value than any "68" graded sixpences or even a "66-7" Gothic florin of a commoner date.

I think it reasonable for the catalogues to strike the 1854 half sov listings even if Marsh seemed to believe it to exist - I have seen no evidence that he ever saw one which is not to say he didn't.

  • Hi!! I need references for rare coins affiliated with copper mining that had the isotopes of the copper from the Upper Peninsula for my exhibits.

Let me know if you are interested in that topic for your next article.

    Thanks.
