Halloween and all those unwanted commons..........

I have posted on here before that Halloween is a great opportunity to get rid of tons of commons you dont want/know what to do with, and maybe, just maybe start a youngster down the hobby road we all enjoy. As well as the usual candy, what i would do is fill up team bags with 10-20 cards (depending on how many you have) and pass them out to trick-or-treaters. Most little kids love it, they can get candy at the other 64 houses they go to, but you have something different, "baseball cards", (insert your commons sport here). I guess your over produced bulk wax packs that no one wants would be a good choice as well. I just thought i would throw that out for anyone interested, it has worked well for me in the past. Happy Halloweening!

Been giving packs for a few years now. It is amazing how many parents and kids remember that you were the guy that gave them out the previous year. They come looking for them now. The kids all want to know if the local teams and players are in there. Wish I could find some more current stuff to give out at about $5 a box. Plenty of mid 80s to early 90s stuff available, but kids want Pedroia, Chara, Brady, and Garnett, not Boggs, Neely, Eason, and AC Earl. image

Anyone have some 2006 and up stuff to donate of sell real cheap, let me know. I am in Salem, MA...downtown...and give out about 300 packs on Halloween nite.

For the last few years, I make up some team bag packs which always have some Titans players showing and then a bunch of mixed cards inside....at the beginning of the night, when I'm not sure how many kids we will have on a given Halloween, I give them the option of candy or cards....most boys go with the cards and some girls...when it gets towards the end I'm giving shovel fulls of whats left. The kids actually remember it from year to year as when they come back, they ask if I still have cards. Its a great way to possibly start new collectors, while getting rid of unwanted commons

I used to give the kids a choice of a full size candy bar or a pack of cards and it would go about 50/50 every year. I would go through at least a box of cheap packs, usually 1987/88/89 Topps/Bowman baseball, football or hockey. Around 2005'ish I bought a box of Topps Heritage to give out like this and as I remember I only had two or three kids take candy bars before the Heritage box was gone. The last two years I've just given out candy bars because I haven't thought to pick up any junk wax to give out.

If you REALLY want to get kids interested in the hobby, for God's sake don't give them 80's wax. Give them GOOD stuff that they actually will like. Heck, give them some of your PSA 8's and 9s that the grading Gods didn't like enough for your PSA 10 registry sets. Kids will take PSA 8/9 Chipper cards over a candy bar.

Kids would come back and throw eggs at my house if I gave out Chipper cards on Halloween.

Do kids really want cards of players they haven't heard of from the 80's or 90s? It seems you would want to give away relatively modern cards with an emphasis on local teams and superstars!? Good idea overall but I would think about what you give out. Otherwise the candy will definitely be more interesting to the kids.

I have thought of doing this in the past but never found myself planning ahead far enough. I was thinking of getting some team sets of local teams (Philadelphia teams) for hockey, football and baseball. Topps team sets can be had for $1 with shipping and some sellers have 10+ sets available which helps on shipping. I also wanted to get some modern packs with some chance to pull something exciting. Any advice on a box of baseball/football/hockey from 2009-2012 that has 20 packs or so in it that runs $2-4 per pack. Based on the number of kids I usually get I would probably on need two/three boxes total and might even have some left over for myself at the end. I saw Topps Magic football from 2009 that seemed in the range and some more recent SP boxes as well. Any suggestions? Was hoping for something that has about 3 autos/relics per box.

Like I said, except for the one Heritage box, I always gave out 80's wax and kids always wanted them as they would choose the packs over candy half the time. If someone wants to send me 2-3 free Heritage boxes I'll be happy to give them away.image
  • I could put together a box of approx. 500 cards, with cards from Topps, Bowman and Upperdeck for the years 2008-2011. There are some stars in the lot, no short prints or any Harper's, Strasburg or Trout. This would be good for those planning to give cards to the kids on Holloween.

Let me know, $10 shipped (paypal)

  • I don't know what to do with all of my old buttons and pencils. I've accumulated a lot of them over the years, and I just can't bring myself to throw them away. Luckily, a bunch of kids will be coming to my house at the end of the month with open trash bags for me to get rid of them.

I couple years ago I gave out a pack of Topps baseball and candy. I can't tell you how many kids said "Do you have soccer cards?" I chased those ungrateful punks off my porch.

After buying $85 worth of candy last night, I wish I would have seen this post earlier. I would have picked up a box or two from you. My thing is I don't have much modern stuff and don't want to give the kids cards of players no longer playing.
