First spouse Alice paul on sale October 11,2012

Its now on the mint new releases page: First spouse series one half ounce gold proof Alice Paul and uncirculated half ounce Alice Paul coins will go on sale October 11,2012 at 12 noon.So who will be buying when they come out?Do you think its going to be a stand alone one of a kind "first spouse"?Should they have chosen an image of a circulating coin of the time instead? What do you think?

  • How is she suppose to be representing Chester Arhur?

This doesn't make any sense, but that is nothing new.

    Looking for PCGS AU58+ 1901-P, 1896-O, & 1894-O
  • I plan to send 25 first spouse gold coins (including 2 A. Paul) in a bulk submission accroding to PCGS policy (minimum 20 coins for first spouse bulk submission?)

Anyone know PCGS pricing policy for first spouse bulk submission? How much do they charge for FS in a first spouse bulk submission? Many thanks.

the Liberties did not represent the single presidents either. They represented the time period though. I am guessing the problem is that there was no PC version of Liberty from 1885 era to use that was not already used (buchanan's liberty) and they chose a historically significant female figure from the time.

As stated before, a cool subset of the Liberty coins ruined by political correctness. Gee, what Liberties could we have had from 1881 to 1885? A Longacre Indian Princess? A Morgan Liberty? Alice Paul was BORN in 1885, and her impact on history was well after the turn of the century - hardly representative of the wild west era and Pres. Arthur's civil service and Navy Dept. accomplishments.

Another PC coin to go the melting pot!

I agree. Was it the Mint or Congress that decided on that one?

Stand-alone individual commem. The only First Spouse coin without "term of office" dates.

The only continuity with the rest of the series lies in the placement of the design elements on obverse and reverse.

It'd be nice if they'd put Lancelot Link on the coin. It would make about as much sense.

Who is Alice Paul? Never heard of her in 57 years.

Good Grief, the mint is running out of people to immortalize.

Look for a series of Supreme Court Justices next. Marshall, Warren, Burger.

Kagen, Ginsberg, Satomayor will be offered by the mint, too.

She's no different than another half ounce of gold. Time will tell which ones were definitely worth it. The first gold spouse I purchased cost under $500. To the moon, Alice !

Hmmm now I am wondering if this "coin" will set a record for the highest # sold of fs coins for the last few years.
  • Got mine friday. Proof. I returned it because it had a nick on her nose. First time Ive ever had to return a spouse.

My guess is that it tops the recent ones and then the downward trend resumes.

  • I don't know why this release grates on my nerves so much. Maybe it's the enormous delay since the last FS, or maybe it's the complete dismissal of the set's true theme. Maybe it's a combination of both.

I am still on the fence as to whether I'm going to continue the FS series, but it'll be difficult to dismiss it carte blanche given that I've been in it since the beginning.

I would not even consider it a FS coin. There is nothing on it that indicates it is part of the series. Of course the books will always serve to remind us of inclusion in the series.

Show and tell with the Alice Paul coin:

"This coin is part of a series called 'First Spouse', featuring the wives of U.S. presidents. The coin honors the wife of President Chester A. Arthur, who unfortunately didn't have a wife while in office, so instead the coin depicts Alice Paul, who wasn't even born until President Arthur was leaving office, and there is no reference at all to the Arthur administration on the coin, but it represents his presidency anyway because Congress says so. Is everything clear now?" image

  • What's even more screwed up is that Congress can't even write legible legislation with respect to something as simple as a modern commemorative program.

Section 103(o)(3)(D)(i)(II) pertains to Alice Paul.

Coinsponge-- I thought the SAME thing! Anyone glancing at that and not knowing obscure presidental history would assume they were husband and wife. I can just hear Alice Paul going: "That pig!? He's old enough to be my grandfather!" and Chester Authur's ACTUAL wife (who died before he was in office) wailing about him being unfaithful to her with a young hussy.

Alice Paul was born in 1885; Arthur died of kidney failure in 1886. No chance for an affair. Bizarre "first spouse" medal collection. The suffrage wagon people and other Alice Paul fans might buy the Alice Paul medal by itself but I am sure they wouldn't want Chester Arthur medal!
