Mike Schmidt on today's autographs

I love this quote: "I’m not in the class of Andre Dawson or the late Harmon Killebrew. Their signatures are artwork. Their slow, methodical signing technique shows immense respect for their names and the items on which they appear."

He's absolutely right. If I was ever to start collecting autographs, I think I'd limit myself to those players that cared about penmanship. Off the top of my head, the only current player I can think of that has a really nice 'graph is Mariano Rivera. I'm sure there are more, but they have to be few and far between. The rest of them leave a LOT to be desired.

Thank you for posting the article. It was worth reading.

It blows my mind when I see certain signatures and it would be impossible to ever know who signed it just by reading it.

This is one of the reasons that I don't collect autographs. Most modern players have crappy penmanship which I consider to be lazy and disrespectful to fans. Look at the signatures of old-timers compared to today. There is no comparison. Your signatue is kind of a window or blueprint of your personality and it saddens me how people can just scribble some garbage and call it an autograph. Pathetic!
