40 years ago today, Roberto Clemente collected the 3,000th and final hit of his career.

Happy Anniversary to one of the greatest of all time.

I don't own any of his cards yet, but feel free to post if you like.

Paul.

Later, Paul.

Pirates played in the NLCS in '72...so today was the anniversary of his final regular season hit...not the last hit of his career

Don't know if anyone listened to "Remember When" on satellite radio this weekend with Rico Petrocelli and Ed Randall, but a fascinating story about the bat used for Roberto's 3000th hit. Worth finding it somewhere to read the whole story if you're not familiar. Long story short is the bat Roberto sent to Cooperstown the day of the hit wasn't the bat he used. He switched to an Adirondack over his usual Louisville Slugger because he said the Slugger "didn't have any hits left in it." Then got the 3000th hit with an Adirondack but was under contract with Louisville Slugger and thus the switch. Story is corraborated in a book they were discussing with the author. Very interesting.
