Inching closer to my Mike Schmidt basic PSA set, but had a question

So, I am down to a point where I think it is feasible to complete my set soon. A few cards I need pop up often on eBay, but others collectors are willing to pay a lot more than me. The one card I never seem to find is the 1981 Fleer #640. Everytime I look for a PSA 10, I cannot find it. For that matter, searching for the card in any PSA grade seldom returns a result. Does anyone have insight into this card? It is not as if it is that rare with a POP of 26 in a PSA 10. Thanks

That's strange. Perhaps the card's value is too low for people to risk sending it in to PSA. One will show up sooner or later.

You might have to buy a couple of raw ones and sub them yourself!

It really shouldn't be rare by any means. The Population Report for 1981 Fleer Mike Schmidt is largely incorrect -- but that is because there are dozens of erroneously labelled 1981 fleer #5's listed as the portrait variety, when in fact they are batting.

The #640 is generally tough than #5, simply because of the cut of the card. That said, you are right that there are many examples of this card graded -- but I think few have been submitting it over the past few years. The card in PSA 9 MINT may only be worth the grading fees, and there are not too many dealer-submitters that can afford that sort of ratio if they're submitting 10-20 examples hoping for a 10.

Be patient -- one will come up, sooner or later.

    Cheers

I recently cracked and graded a case, hitting a lot of 10s, including a bunch of Ryans and Gibsons, etc. There was not one gradable Schmidt in the case.

I did well enough on both grades and sales that I plan to crack another case in the coming weeks.

Yes, be patient... I retired my Schmidt Basic Set, but I can tell you everything comes up for sale eventually.

Good luck with the set! it was very fun!
  • I have been waiting about 6 months to find this card also. I am trying to complete my Schmidt Basic too. If one comes up an eBay, we may have a bidding war. image

Nah, I know what the fair value is for the card and I won't go far over it, so you may get it first. Patience is key. I always tell the story of the 1988 Leaf Mike Schmidt PSA 10. Firts time it came up, it went for over $250.00. Now, it can be had for under $40.00 (if that). I picked one up for a little over $30.00. That porn stache on Mike ain't going nowhere, so I can wait. image

I don't know if you saw, but a #640 PSA 10 sold via Buy It Now on the first day of listing for $39.99 in the past two weeks.
