The Fairfield Company

Ok, so once in a while to get my fix, I'll be at Target and see what they have. They have these put together packages of wax packs from overstock. I know most is junk wax, but it satiates a little. There is one pack that I enjoy. Its $10 and it has 10 packs from various stuff. It usually comes with the same stuff. 2 packs of 2009 Upper Deck OPC. A pack of 2008 UD Timeline. 2010 Topps. The obligatory 1988 Donruss and Score. 2009 SP Authentic. And a few other packs of either Topps or Upper Deck.

These are not the same as blister packs because Topps or Upper Deck does not sell this. But on the back it says "distributed by The Fairfield Company". Anyone know who these guys are? They seem to hoard overstock and repackage it at discount prices. While its fun, it makes me wonder if cards today have a scarcity to them. Or if printing number are the same, just spread out through 5 main sets with 20 subsets for each.

The Fairfield Co., or one of its corporate predecessors, has been around since the early 1980s, much of it repackaging remainder packs for retail chains. They were advertisers in SCD for much of my time there. The principal's name is Steve J., whose last name I can't recall the spelling of, but which is pronounced Yus-kay-vich. They were also involved, under a different corporate name, I believe, in The Sporting News Conlon Collection issues.

I think the predecessor you're thinking of is Megacards. They're in my city; I'm pretty sure they're in the same building that Megacards was in. The owner's name is Ed, he lives on a mail route I used to do, and seems to be a genuinely good guy. I don't think he's a serious card collector himself, so chances are that the stuff is not cherry picked.
