Pls Grade this Morgan...

Ok, took a few pictures here at home to replace the earlier scans. Coin is definitely frosty on the devices (particularly obverse), not flat as appeared in the scans. It's definitely gem, just wondering if it has a shot at MS66. Marks are so minimal (only tics in the fields, clean cheek excepting that surface graze at the cheekbone and a few light contacts), strike is superb (best strike on an eagle I've seen), and the reverse rim toning is great in hand.

From the pics, in my opinion, no chance at a 66 due to the rather obvious mark on the cheek.

Yup...65...unless the grader is having a REALLY bad day
  • Well, my pics aren't the best of course, and the mark on the cheekbone appears much worse than actually is in hand. It looks like a graze from being in a roll, it's not deep or pitted. Maybe that would preclude an MS66, all I know is this one has a much cleaner look than my 1882 S MS66. Oh well. If I get it graded I'll share the TrueViews!

65 unless that grazing mark sort of "disappears" when the coin is titled under a light- then 66. Strike is strong and luster looks blazing (even with your poor photos). The reverse is, as typical with gems- 67 quality in appearance!

  • At best, 65. However, it wouldn't surprise me if came back 64.

The hit connecting the star to the neck will hold it from a 66, some other minor hits hold it from a 65.

I was on 64+/65 due to what's possibly going on under the eye and the hit in front of the neck.

That surface graze you refer to is most like die rust which is common on 1883-P dollars. Also, many coins struck from such dies have really nice luster.
