Why no group case/box breaks of modern here on CU

I was curious why the board does'nt seem to have group breaks of modern stuff.

I have been in a few breaks here and there and have done fairly well at times.

Just to be clear I am talking about a break where someone opens the box/case on video like Youtube and/or blog.tv and you pay for or are drawn for a certain team/ teams.

I really enjoy this board and I see people opening modern stuff at times so I was curious if these types of breaks are allowed here or if any one even likes them.

What are you guys thoughts?

BTW I am not neccessarily looking to do them or host them just more curious than anything.

I never understood the pleasure of paying for a box/pack and watching someone else open it.

I understand your point. Sometimes though you cant afford or dont want to buy a whole case/box. Also if you collect certain teams or whatever these kind of breaks can be good.

  • A modern rip would be quite fun, but would think it would have to be a case and all buy boxes. Maybe a case of baseball, fooball, nascar, and as side inclusions basketball and, and, hockey. Would be fun to purchase modern boxes of each sport and see what all gets ?

Regarding the video rip (rippoff) thing. Totally lame, no chance anyone rippin stuff I bought for me.

Like I said I see your points.

On the other hand I was in a case break of the Fleer Retro basketball which seems to be going for around $4000 a case now. Theres no way I can buy the whole case, but I did buy two spots in the break. Yea it was a gamble and I didnt hit anything real big. It was fun and pretty exciting to see what everyone got since it was live on blog.tv . There were some nice hits in the case.

I dont buy many spots in these type of breaks but it is sorta fun once in a while.

I open a lot of boxes and packs myself as well.

I have no desire to pay someone else to open packs for me.

    Appreciate today-

I recall a video on you tube from one of these "box breaks" where the guy opening the packs slipped aside a huge dollar insert by saying something like "I don't know what this is." Maybe someone can refresh my memory.

Bottom line, when that much money is at stake, you don't want someone else doing the ripping. Plus the ripper gets to have all the fun. May as well buy a scratch off ticket..

Is this some new phenomenon? I see eBay auctions for certain teams in box breaks now. Seems lame

also, the interest here is primarily vintage, and other places (like blowout) already do modern breaks very well.

also, I'm of course +1 on not letting someone else rip my packs, but what peeps are paying for isn't that, but the chance to get a whole case's worth of just their team without having to crack and sell off the rest. to me, i see that as the main draw for modern collectors who get in on these rips. somehow, I don't see that working so well for an 86 fleer BK rip. or any rip where the potential real value is in both nostalgia and the condition of the hit, not the hit itself.

Modern breaks are HUGE on the Blowout Cards board (or so I'm told). They usually involve a host, who breaks the box or case, and some type of lottery-like scheme. The focus here on CU is primarily vintage (hence the BBCE breaks) and vintage-like modern, such as Topps Heritage and Allen & Ginter...I don't think there's a lot of interest in modern here, but I could be wrong.

The "host" also usually gets a free spot in the break and makes at least $100. Its almost always a ripoff.

I did it once just to see how it worked several years back. I think I drew the Mets and had a chance to get, like 3-4 crappy players. I ended up with like 1-3 cards of 3-4 crappy players and ended up paying something like $5 for postage. It was a total bust and I have no desire to throw away my money in that fashion.
