Can shipping really be this much?

I just won this auction for $31 (with a max bid of $81), but I didn't realize the seller was charging $600 for shipping. Did I just get had, or did I still get a steal? Not sure what to think of this, but I welcome your input.

1979 Topps Ozzie Smith BVG 9.5

"But in special occasion the starting bid is at $600." This sentence alone makes me want to proceed with extreme caution. Is there a way I can request the seller to set up an escrow account so that he doesn't take my money and run?

This is ridiculous! First of all, you should have NEVER bid on this item. There are so many red flags here I wouldn't even try to list them all. Seller is obviously a MORON.

I would not even think about trying to complete this transaction. If you do, and get screwed, please do not post here about lousy eBay sellers.

In the old days, this would fall under the category of "fee avoidance" but ebay now takes the same FVF from shipping, too, so not sure what the seller's angle is here. Either way, I would not deal with him.

Edit to add: I'm pretty sure the flip and the card are not one and the same either..

Gotta like how the flip and the card aren't in the same picture.

Yeah, I should have been more cautious. I've dealt with so many good people on eBay that I guess I got lazy and became too trusting. I'm not used to sellers gouging on shipping. I just assumed people were honest. Guess I assumed too much!
  • Seller was definitely trying to get a workaround. But as mentioned, eBay charges for shipping in their FVF. The description, however, says starting bid is $600, so he is clearly including the shipping charges. I would guess, if you wanted you could file a report for overcharging on shipping from eBay and make the sale void. Unless you want it for $631, then thats what he is charging.

    From the same seller:

    $2.500 shipping for one card

It seems to be the same card as the one the OP greedily snapped up.

  • the seller also says that all returns in 7 days get full refund... but, does that always include shipping fees??? and, that could be the "catch" here....
still, i suspect this has to violate ebay policy which i think i saw somewhere said something about providing shipping at or above the level that one charges...
so, technically, this guy can't simply stuff this in a bubble envelope for $2.00 and mail it....

I wouldn't consider bidding on any of his auctions let alone send him money.

    Good for you.

After doing a little research of my own via eBay's Help pages, I filed a report on this listing, as the seller is clearly attempting to work around eBay's final value fee.

I was foolish and should have noticed this, but I didn't.

Hope this doesn't happen again to anyone else.

Doesn't eBay charge the same commission on shipping fees as they do on final value fees?

    Ebay policy-----

*The total amount of the sale equals the cost of the item, shipping charges, and any other amounts you may charge the buyer. Sales tax is not included in the total amount of the sale.

  • It also appears that the title card is snipped, not to include serial number or sub-grades. For all we know this is two pictures from two different cards. The seller only has 22 feedback and one item for sale. Even thought he has 100% feedback, that is easy to get in a short period of time, if your intention is to suddenly spring two 9.5 Ozzie Smith rookies with $2500 shipping charges. I see crooked seller on all ends.
