Rattler thread spinoff (key-dates)

This recent thread got me thinking. As mentioned in that thread, as a Red and RB Lincoln collector, I for one appreciate the rattlers and old NGC fattles/soap bars. As discussed, there are many others as well who value those holders and even those who put exclusive sets of old holders together. Having said this, how many key dates are out there in these old holders. The double whammy so to speak....

I'll start. I have 2. One of them is a 1909VDB MPL in an old fattie. As much as I would like to cross this to boost my registry, I do not want to lose the holder. I had the bean put on it and am perfectly happy where it resides. Anyone else have something to share?!

Be careful how you store any copper in the old rattler holders---I've read that they are less air-tight than the more modern slabs.

I also like the older holders for copper and silver. I get the feeling that since the coin has been in that holder for a long time, that it is somewhat stable and not likely to have been messed with.

Of course, the holders are not airtight and they must be stored properly with long term preservation in mind.

Hate to say it but the fact that many of them were gassed / messed within the holder is why the design was scrapped. First with the collor in the type 2 followed very shortly with the new design that still is not totally sealed.

These aren't key dates. Just RD and RB IHC rattlers that seem to be holding their color.

    Nice coins Lance!

Sorry folks, I can't let this thread die without any replies. Any key dates in rattlers or fatties out there? If you don't have them have you seen them? Are they that rare?!

I don't know what is out there in rattlers. All I know is that they are terrible holders.

If I buy a coin in a rattler ..... I send it in for a reholder fast!

Yes, yes. We know. And if they are in a doily, and if they are in anything but the latest and greatest.

Doily's I can take or leave. It's the coin I buy. If it's a coin I need and like I will buy it and get it in a PCGS slab with attribution. If it does not need attribution and is a PCGS holder other than a rattler...I keep as is. If it is in a holder other than PCGS.....I cross it.

    Rattlers get reholdered.....no matter what.
