Parthian Trio

After seeing a few of the Parthian pieces here I ended up buying this lot without careful study of the theme. Three Drachms depicting King Orodes II yet different varieties (see reverse archer with bow). After glancing at the Shore book listing the different Sellwood numbers its clear to me that this is a very challenging series to collect by varieties and it may make sense to focus on a nice set of the kings. Regardless these are quite neat to own, even if temporarily.

Very pretty coins. Looks like you've got two different mints and two different obverse types. These are interesting, historic coins representing good value for the money. A great deal of more recent research have moved attributions around a bit so both Sellwood and especially Shore are out of date. What I've been using is this site which leverages the most recent research, still ties to Sellwood numbers, provides a lot of historical context and is pretty easy to navigate. Of great value is the "Sellwood Type Numbers Index" which has good pix of almost all varieties, but almost real time in terms of using the most current research.

IMHO, a nice run of kings is a fun excursion (my choice too) unless you are willing to put the kind of attention/effort into them as you obviously have with the Hapsburg series. There are some interesting sets of subvarieties that were fun to put together, but my primary interests are elsewhere so chasing the kings and a few interesting groups of varieties is enough for me and I'm down to the last 2 or 3 kings. One interest I've had is contemporary copies and here's an old post of what you might consider looking for if the notion strikes:

    linky

Congrats again on a nice start to this great series. Look forward to what else might fall into your net.

edited to add: I just realized that you'd commented on my earlier post Zohar. Sorry to be repetitive, but this is one of my favorite series (altho not in a specialist collecting sense for some reason) so always happy to have the chance to get the word out...

STLNATS - thank you so much for this. Given the complexity of the varieties, I may just keep one of each, trying to find nice examples from time to time. Very distinctive designs which caught my attention (as did many on this forum).

    Thanks again,
    Z

Well done Zohar - I like the variety that you are introducing outside the core collection.
