Question on Express Mail shipping on a Friday???

Question: Please ship the coin on Friday with Express mail so I am able to receive it on Saturday, thanks!

Response: "Sorry, we can't ship Express on Friday because our insurance won't cover Express shipping on Fridays"

Is this true, or is it really saying, "Sorry, we're too lazy to expedite this order today and will get to it out on Monday" ???

Any thoughts?image Never been hit by this response before.

In any event, this not so savvy seller is off my buy list. Too many nice coins out there to choose from to deal with such pettiness.

Although the sellers answer is kind of crummy, you won't get an express mail package on Saturday anyway. I have gone through this with the post office before. Express mail shipped on Friday will not be delivered until the following Monday.

Express Mail shipped on a Friday can usually be delivered on a Saturday if you're within the overnight network.

It is common for insurance policies to exclude shipping on Fridays, on weekends and the day prior to major holidays. You can get these clauses lifted (by usually paying a little more for insurance).

All depends on locations. I can ship from CA for overnight to FL. Have done it several times. However, the PO will likely not guarantee a overnight to me on SAt due to limited Sat hours for my branch.

Now that is interesting. You are practically shipping across the country an they are telling that it could possibly be delivered on saturday, but there is no guarantee. I live in the middle of the country and I have been told more than once that Express mail will deliver on the following Monday.

  • Indeed several numismatic insurance companies will only insure for half of the value when shipping on the weekends. That, along with the lack of guarantee from the USPS prevents many from overnight shipping on Friday.

I have no problem with the "possibility" that the package won't arrive until Monday. I know that USPS Express is 'not' guaranteed. My issue is that I was told the coin won't even ship 'til Monday. I bought and paid for it on Thursday, and there is no reason for it not to ship today (Friday). Again, I calculate this as nothing less than laziness and saying, we'll get to your order when we get around to it after the weekend. Again, this simply makes my circle of potential dealers to deal with smaller and more concise to those who actually care about the collector.

next day delivery for express hinges on time of day dropped off at PO and if there are direct flights between the two sort facilities. The more airline transfers the less the chances.

LA to JAX is quicker than middle of nowhere to middle of nowhere even if its only a couple hundred miles. USPS computer digests the travel data when it determines guaranteed delivery date and time.

If their computer determines delivery by noon on Sat. they will normally go with that. I have received Sat. packages before noon but not after noon since USPS cut back on weekend hours.

When I ship as mentioned above they guarantee it for Sat by noon. They also give me the option of Monday. I always take Saturday. It is all logistics and how things line up with trucks and planes.

    Often does not work.
I just did a BST here...seller put it into express mail last Friday 10:38AM.....delivery was guaranteed the next day Saturday.....never happened.
    It arrived this last Monday.
So, even if the PO accepts it and says it will get there overnight don't count on it.

It is true that many insurance policies will not fully cover Friday shipments. It has to do with increased transit times and the inability for some items to be delivered on Saturday.

I think that you are being unreasonable. I would prefer the seller ship the coin on Monday. The less time in the hands of the post office the better.

It's too risky to time it properly.

    Probably true.

Package would more likely be at risk for loss or rifiling due to it hanging around extra days over a weekend.

I know I my self wont ship express on friday if a High $ package.

Let your BST seller know, he will get a full refund on the shipping from the PO (by presenting his receipt) for not meeting the guaranteed delivery.

I have shipped ExpressMail on a Friday and had it arrive on a Saturday before.

Depending upon the ZIP code that you ship from and the ZIP code that the package is going to, and also at what point in the day that you ship, Express Mail may take one or two days to arrive at a destination. I encounter this quite often from where I ship and have come to realize that there are quite a few places that will not receive an Express Mail package from me the next day, no matter what time of day I ship the package. Also, there are stipulations in many insurance policies that specifically prohibit using Express Mail on a Friday or Saturday because of the possibility that the package will sit over the weekend in an otherwise unsecured manner. This is a real concern and a real clause in many policies.

USPS Express mail delivers on Saturday at no extra charge.

They don't state that they are shipping USPS.

Private insurance can make any rule they want and avoiding having packages sitting around on the weekend is a common theme.

As many have stated above, many insurance companies will cover only half the value of shipments made on a Friday.

We won't ship Express mail on Friday because there is too much risk involved. If it doesn't make it to the destination on Saturday, then it sits somewhere over the weekend. Packages that sit somewhere over a weekend are much more likely to turn up missing. Yes, I know, sometimes the package will arrive safe and sound on Saturday, but is it worth the risk?

Accordingly, although I don't know your dealer or your transaction, my guess is that the non-shipment on Friday is much more a security issue than laziness of a "not so savvy seller".

Hugh Wood doubles your deductible and greatly limits your coverage if you ship FedEx over a weekend, but not Express Mail. I asked them about it and they said they said that FedEx tends to use part-timers and short-term employees over the weekend and that's when things tend to disappear. No issue with Express Mail.

Express mail is pretty safe the way it's expedited, but there's a risk for loss shipping items that value wise should really be sent under lock & key registered.

I will not ship on a Friday and try to calculate legal holidays so the packages aren't sitting in a distribution center.

That's not true. Last Friday HA sent me a coin express and I received it next day (Saturday).

I try not to ship on fridays and express mail is how I ship 90% of my packages. When I shipped fedex in the 90's I had the same policy. I'll make exceptions but they are exceptions depending on the coin, customer etc.

It seems not shipping on friday is a good idea. Don't tell that to ebay. They insist you ship in one business day if you want to be a Top Rated Seller. --Jerry

I think the explanation the dealer provided to you could easily be true depending on their insurance company and the terms of their individual policy.
  • I recently shipped a package express mail to Mariner67, the package left on Friday and was guaranteed by 3pm on Saturday. The package was fully insured for $900. So the USPS does not restrict insuring the package on Friday. I don't know what the policies are for private insurance companies but the USPS will insure regardless of the day.

On another note, the package did not make it to it's destination on time. I was able to go to the PO on Monday as I was not available to be there on Tuesday. The package hadn't even made it to it's destination and I was given a full refund for the shipping portion of the package. Of course they didn't refund the insurance which I didn't expect anyhow.

Not sure if this helps or not but I hope it does as this was a package sent out last week.
