Coin grading book suggestions?

morgansforevermorgansforever Posts: 8,470 ✭✭✭✭✭
I have the Grading Coins by Photographs, by David Bowers. It's not bad but the pics are scale size.
IMO the pics should be 2-3x to really see the surfaces. I'm not knocking Bowers or Whitman just a suggestion.
Purchased in the cellophane and went on the dealers comment of a must have book. If I was able to thumb though it I wouldn't have bought it.
I read the entire book, very informative but the pics were lacking. Any suggestions?

lcoopie, I'm aware of this but wanted something similar in hard copy form.
Just something about a book, maybe I'm wierd image

EDIT: The PCGS Online Grading is a great reference.
    Anyone here own this one?
Making the Grade, from the editors of Coin World and Coin Values comes one of the easiest to use guides in determining and assessing a coins grade. This expanded 2nd edition of Making the Grade now includes the 50 most widely collected US coins (double the number of the first edition). Each coin series listed features high quality, full-color, detailed photos with grade descriptions and pinpoint areas to inspect. Design high points are highlighted to indicate areas of wear. Visual impairment severity levels are identified by color maps.

Of course, there's the original Photograde - the pictures of the tiny coins are enlarged, but some folks complain about the quality of the black-and-white pictures.

There's also the ANA Grading Guide - I don't have a copy, but I've heard it's pretty good.

Some of the specialty books, like Bruce Fox's book on Walkers and the VAM book, include grading guides for their specific series.

I think that digital images online will be more useful than any printed material anymore. The cost of printing high quality images makes a large volume containing all series of coins prohibitive anymore.
If you take cost and amount of content in mind a subscription to Coin Facts might be the best way to go with material being updated all the time and about $130.00 cost for the year.

Agree! But going to the ANA Summer Seminar on grading is better. Make the investment.
