Amazing! Opinions welcome. Lets see what eBay does.

This is what I received from one of my Canadian customers:
Hi, I paid for this item a while back and have just realized that there was a big mistake with my Paypal address. Paypal has mistakenly reverted to a very very old address, older than two years (I moved to Canada from Michigan in August 2010). My current correct ship-to address is shown below. You should expect sometime in the next while that the package will be returned to you. Please keep an eye out for it and re-mail to the address below. Should you incur extra shipping costs I'm glad to help with that (though it was Paypal's & Ebay's error). Because the items may have to go back through customs there may be a large delay. Please let me know when you get them back and are able to reship them. Sorry for the huge inconvenience. Ron
then today:
Dear pastime08,
Hi, thanks for continuing to keep an eye out for the return of this package. I do understand that returns do take time. Just to warn you in advance, I will have to shortly file a paypal/ebay "not received" claim on this purchase (I must do it within 60 days of original purchase date). Certainly not an indictment on you, but the only way I can have possible recourse should it not over the next while get returned. Thanks again for your patience, again, my correct address is below, and any additional shipping costs I'm very happy to cover. Ron (Ouguiya)

No matter that you comply with PayPal's rules and the buyer has the IQ of slime mold and screws up his own address, PayPal will freeze the funds when the buyer puts in his claim. Because your tracking info shows that it hasn't been delivered yet (even if the USPS website shows that notice is left for the buyer for pickup), PayPal will keep the claim open until it either shows delivery (at which point they find in the seller's favor) or the item shows as being returned to sender by the USPS (at which point they will find in the buyer's favor).
This same situation happens in non-ebay PayPal transactions too - it happened to my mother's business earlier this year. Luckily for her, she got the merchandise back in the mail and was only out the cost of cross-country Priority Mail, DC, and insurance (though her buyer refused to believe that he had made a mistake and wanted to know how she got his old address).
I have seen from several websites that it is becoming an increasing problem for sellers that buyers develop remorse, refuse to sign for packages or pick up large packages, and they are returned so that the seller is out the shipping cost (and maybe out the item as well if it gets lost during the return).

Jason, I know the fault was not yours. I was told by Ebay that if I don't file a claim after 60 days I have absolutely no recourse (from Ebay or Paypal) with this transaction. It may take longer to get this resolved because returned mail is very slow. The package you mailed was mailed within the US. It was not my fault regarding the address--Paypal/Ebay mistakenly incorporated my old US address (2555 Ridgemoor Dr SE Kentwood MI 49512) into several of my August purchases. My current address is in Canada. I'm asking you to check with the post office because the items would have been sent within the US so they should be covered because I see you had a tracking number. In this case the item was returned to sender because I am no longer at that dwelling. However the tracking stops when the item reaches its destination so you would need to call rather than look it up on line. You should be getting the items back maybe within the week or two. I'm asking that when you do that you contact me so that I can pay you for the shipping charge, and that you then mail them to my correct Canadian address as shown below. This is a lot of money so any help would be greatly appreciated. If you could check with the post office and tell them the circumstances (with your tracking number, is it insured too?), that would be very much appreciated. It has not been 60 days since purchase date, that is just the absolute last resort if nothing happens in the next couple weeks. They were purchased around August 7 so that would be around October 5 or so. Sorry for the huge inconvenience. Thanks, Ron (PS current address below)

Jason, they were shipped to Michigan, so they should be trackable. The resident at that address received the parcel, but then subsequently gave it back to the mail carrier (with some others) to be returned to sender. They are now being returned to sender (you). Probably marked as undeliverable to that address. You should get them soon. Thanks again. Ron

Hi Jason, so are you willing to help me a little on this one? I paid a lot of money for these cards and am going to do absolutely everything in my power to facilitate getting them back to me. Again, the package was tracked according to the website so you should be able to follow up with USPS and confirm that it is on its way back to you. I will paypal you whatever shipping costs it will take to send them over to me in Canada as soon as I here from you they have been returned. Filing a claim is only a last resort measure, not to indict you, but to continue to have the option of having recourse if I don't get them back before the 60th day after they were purchased (October 5). Again, sorry for all the inconvenience, and any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks and have a great evening.....Ron
I concur.. best of luck.. this sucks
<< <i>So I gather that even though he acknowledges that it is not my fault, it is not his fault either (ebay and pay pal's fault) so hence someone should cover the cost and it should be me since it is the way that goes. >>
Okay I will play devils advocate and say I think you are taking this a little to far. What exactly should he do?
Successful card BST transactions with cbcnow, brogurt, gstarling, Bravesfan 007, and rajah 424.
I don't know if I believe his story. I think he may have been trying to pull a scam on me as he wanted me to refund his money. The address probably belongs to someone he knows. I just don't believe a police office would have been involved at that point but I may be wrong.
PM me if you want the ebay id of the buyer to determine if it is the same ebay buyer on your item.

packages and to let him know when the seller gets them and he'll paypal enough money to cover the cost of shipping to Canada.
If he files a claim to "keep his options open" the facts (especially with the buyer leaving messages that explain the transaction) clearly back the seller.
I certainly don't see anyone trying to pull a scam but I could be wrong.
I hope the OP is communicating with the buyer and not leaving him hanging. We all make mistakes (even if we think it's a ebay/paypal mistake). After a mistake is made
all we can do is work to try to fix it and it sounds like the buyer is trying to.
<< <i>So I gather that even though he acknowledges that it is not my fault, it is not his fault either (ebay and pay pal's fault) so hence someone should cover the cost and it should be me since it is the way that goes. >>
What 'cost' are you talking about?

What cost is he asking you to cover?

No, the buyer said he will pay to have them reshipped.

<< <i>I think the only thing the buyer is asking is to recover his funds and then the seller is now at risk at losing his cards....not saying they wont show up, just that the seller is now will have his items at risk, while the buyer (whose fault it is and admits it) has no risk at all >>
DING! DING! DING!
To the OP, just remember that you did nothing wrong. As others have said, call PP and speak to a super about your situation. Good luck.
<< <i>So when entering his new address he didn't feel the need to delete his old address, even though his doesn't live there any longer? Not very bright. >>
very true, which by reading the other post and its happened to them as well ide say it was a glitch, or another way to scam the seller,,, supers can give money back to you all you need to do is talk to them,,, i got a hundo back once after talking to them on a bad deal with the buyer who took advantage of the no tracking number rule on me way back when it was first implicated,, the dummy not only got them but tried selling them under a different ebay name soon after my sale ended,, i found that seller because the moron used a paypal address for payment that was the same as his alter ego,,, lololol,, not the brightest pea in the pod
<< <i>So when entering his new address he didn't feel the need to delete his old address, even though his doesn't live there any longer? Not very bright. >>
He likely did delete his address. Even though they're from 2010, check out these posts from the Paypal help forum. These are just a few of them.
Old Address Still Showing Up
Sep-14-2010 07:26 PM
Two months ago I changed my address and deleted the old one. I use this account for my business and have transactions almost daily. Each time the correct address shows up. today I purchased through Ebay and paid with my PayPal account only to discover my old address appeared and that is the one that the seller shipped to. Thank goodness I still have a mail forward in place but this is going to significantly delay receiving my goods and therefore will affect my business.

This is happening to me also. The transaction details show the shipping address as an old address. I have checked everywhere in ebay and paypal and nowhere does it still have my old address listed (that I can find).

I too have been experiencing this, but not through eBay purchases. Through other site purchases where I use paypal, and it's not with all sites, only some. They give me a long list of old addresses that don't exist anywhere. I've never even used these addresses with the site in question. And when I go to select the right one and hit ok, it reverts back every time!
