To grade or not to grade - That is the question

Since my initial send to PSA, I am cautious about what I send in to get graded and for what reason. Most of what I send is purely for reselling purposes. At the same time I am more aware of what and how the grading system works and what to expect, both as a grade and an appropriate market value with it. I am hoping with the right cards, I can expand a little without too much personal capital put into it. I still scratch my head when I see some PSA 10's go for under 5 bucks when it costs roughly 5-6 bucks for the grading alone. I know its not a perfect market or a perfect system, however, there are some items that you can rely on being more bankable. Anyway, these are 5 cards I have as possibilities, but I am looking for your opinion on the matter of whether these are better off selling raw, or get graded. I hope I am not imposing by the question. It's mpt something I want to do regularly, however, I am still new at this so some opinions will be helpful. Thanks. Anthony

    No on the Messier..

Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.
  • It could be just the scan, but the left edge on the Winfield worries me. I would send it in for grading anyway, as it looks like a lock for an 8 if it grades.

I would leave the rest raw.

Just curious. What do you see on the left edge?
  • It looks a little wavy to me near the middle of the left edge. The right edge does not look that way.
Could just be the scan; could just be my eyes playing tricks on me- but if something is there it would concern me a little.

Nevertheless, nice card and I'd send it in. Assuming it hasn't been tampered with, I think it's an 8 for sure. Maybe 8.5. I think some combination of centering and corners probably keep it out of a PSA 9 holder.

  • I agree the centering is slightly high. There is a little red spot to the right above his shoulder which concerns me as well. And I believe thats a fish-eye near his chin. Nice looking without it blown up the way it is. I did not notice them until I just scanned it.

Under a loop that I have, the left side seems to have less of a clean edge than the right, but not sure how significant it is in the eyes of those that look at.

The Gifford I did not think I would grade, but that its a 1958 made me wonder if age made a difference in the matter.

The Canseco is not perfect so thats out. The Messier is too off-center. Its a popular card so it should sell ok on its own.

The Clemente is also off center with rough corners. Seems a common problem with this card judging from my research. But equally a popular card and should be ok selling it raw.

Agree with Walt the Winfield is the best of the lot--PSA 8, imo..

You have a shot at an 8 on the Winfield but I would not bother grading the rest of those cards.

    Appreciate today-

  • Raw....none will grade high, selling graded wil not be worth the time or money. Agreed Winfield is an 8.
