Why is this 1916-D Mercury dime not selling (lists for a 1000$ in this grade)?

Comments

  • It has scratches in bad places on both the obverse and reverse, and a gouge in a bad place on the reverse.

Not all G4s are created equal.

1916-D Merc Dimes in PCGS G04 usually trade in the $700-$800 range from what I've seen. So no surprise that one isn't selling for the higher price. Also, you can usually get a decent PCGS G06 for under $900.

It's not a particularly attractive example (those scratches on the reverse are bad) and overpriced (they can be had for the in the 700s easy).

    eBay Link

As others posters noted, it's a $700 coin to most people.

I'm kind of surprised it graded must of been done before they started the details or Genuine grading.

matrix - I recommend that you slow way down until you gain more knowledge before you buy any expensive coins. That knowledge won't be gained in a thread or two either. Your apparent rush to acquire coins for investment purposes will lead to mistakes and will be expensive tuition eventually when you try to sell them again.

If you cannot resist, then line up some trusted dealers that have quality offerings and avoid ebay!

    situation.

parts of it remind me of coins I'd picked up from parking lots. woof woof

Actually, prior to "Details" or "Genuine" grading, coins got body bagged.

This particular coin, given the significance of its rarity, simply got graded regardless of those scratches which would have doomed a Roosevelt to a body bag or a genuine holder.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

Sound advice that is what I will be doing as of now. I only have 2 U.S coins in my collection the 1794 1/2 cent in PCGS VG-10 and my 1921 half dollar in PCGS F-12 the rest are Canadian coins. So I have not been just buying just anything...but need help like I get here to guide me for the future.
