This is just painful. -- Finally refunded, two questions.

I recently bought this item off eBay: Link

I have a few other Mantle printing plates, including a couple from his playing days, so I thought I'd add this to the collection.

Well, this afternoon, the mail woman leaves this at my front door.

I slowly open the package praying that there is no damage, but....

It's time to email the seller I guess :/

  • From his auction:

"The Mick: Hero For All Season”

    Death of Mickey Mantle

USA Today Newspaper Printing Press Plate

    Dated: August 19, 1995

    Measures: 23” x 13 1/3”

This item is in mint condition

There are no bends crease or rips in this plate

    Great addition to any collection

Please view photos for full description

I just can't believe it would've been packed like that...
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

  • I see it went parcel post. It would have been better served shipping in a box designed for mirrors and stamped/marked "do not bend". Also, UPS is better handling those type of packages.

what a waste of an item.
  • it's amazing how few people really know how to pack large and odd sized items for mailing... or that they somehow believe the postal service will actually "handle with care."

i had something similar happen to me maybe 8-9 years ago... and what made it worse was that the seller indicated in his description that he
was retired from the post office..
but, he shipped a 3 foot in-store paperboard promotional item in a simple flat with no added packing or stiffening materials.... i come home one night to find this bent piece of cardboard on my front porch....

long story short... he refunded and didn't want the damaged item back... it hangs in my basement bathroom as a cautionary tale of how not to ship something...

my other story involves a bobblehead mailed in a large padded envelope... no original box.... no packing.... nothing..
shockingly it made it in one piece... go figure....

"Handle With Care" is an open invitation for the sorting center to proceed with mayhem. In addition, I've also had numerous problems with sellers of signed photos that ship in nothing more than a flat priority mail envelope. They always claim I'm the first one to have my photo damaged.

Marking "Fragile", "Handle with care", "Do not bend" etc. on a package is like telling someone not to look up no matter what. Invariably, they WILL look up.
IT IS ALWAYS CHEAPER TO NOT SELL ON EBAY

I finally have been refunded for this.

He asked me to sign the USPS insurance claims and fax them over to him, that was an ordeal.

Long story short, I am out $10 in shipping the thing back to him and still kind of pissed.

    I have two questions:

    1. Should I ask for my return shipping to be refunded?
    2. Should I neg him?

    Thanks guys,
    Jason

  • I personally think he should of covered everything including shipping. It was his job to make sure it got to you safely and he failed to send this properly or without anything written on it such as "fragile" or "Do Not Bend". He should of been out the $10 - not you.

I think now its too late since he refunded you. I dont think you should leave a neg since you guys already came to an agreement. Just chalk this one up as experience in case you come across a similar situation in the future.

it's not too late. he should PayPal you the additional funds for shipping as a Payment Owed with no fees removed.

i'd make it clear to the seller that this should be his responsibility if you haven't do so already.

I forgo the $10 and simply neg him....."Poor Packing Caused Damage of Item; Out $10 for Return" or something along those lines.....Other buyers need to be warned that he/she took so little care...

I'd first ask him for the $10.00. Don't make a big deal about it. If he says OK, then you are made whole. If he says no, I would not respond and then I'd go the above route.

Get your money back AND neg.

Future buyers should be warned that the dude doesn't care to take the time and properly package the items he sends out.

Thanks for the ideas. I sent out this email I'll give him a couple days before I neg.

Thanks for the refund, your printing plate went out yesterday. The return shipping cost me $10. Next time be more careful when shipping.

Your third sentence might be the one that makes him say 'no'
