Anyone ever have an ebay buyer who refused to leave good feedback for anyone?

In 14 years of ebay, I have never encountered a person like this until last week.

This guy wins an auction from me. The item was Pick any 10 auction from a lot of 2012 Topps Archives High Number SPs; about 30 different.

The guy picks his ten, I send them to him, remove the 10 he picked, and re-list the auction, minus his ten.

A few days later, this guy emails me and says he's missing one of the cards he picked. I KNOW this is impossible because I no longer had the card in my possession and it had been removed from the re-listed auction. I even emailed the guy who won the re-listed auction to make sure I hadn't sent him the card, and I hadn't.

So I know the guy is straight up lying to me. I check his feedback and see that he has over 100 positives left for him as a buyer, but he has only left feedback for 3 sellers. One neg, and two modified from neg.

In one of our emails I asked him about it, and he flat out told me that no, he never left positive feedback for something a seller is supposed to do, but only negative feedback when things don't go right. He ended the email with "get the hint?"

He obviously witholds positive feedback so he can threaten a negative if his demands after the auction aren't met.

I refunded him 10% of the price of the auction to avoid a big drawn out hassle. I figured a couple of bucks was worth it.

Have any of you had a similar experience with a jerk like this?

  • Nothing like this but, has anybody noticed that buyers are not leaving feedback at all anymore. I am a small seller on ebay and only sell 5 to 10 items every few months. This past month I sold 8 items and received 1 feedback total.
  • I'm telling you guys!!

Yeah, I was referring to him. For fun just follow his feedback, it is amazing. Do you ever have those dreams about the buying sprees you would go on if you won the lottery? That is his life. Especially when he is working something specific, price be damned, he will finish it quickly.
  • never dealt with the dude but blocked him anyway.

That is feedback extortion. That is a violation of eBay's T&C. If you mention that to the buyer, sometimes that scares them enough to not leave a neg. Sometimes it does not. I've had a few people use that on me and actually leave me a neg. I simply contacted eBay and to my surprise, they were actually helpful and removed the neg. Just because he didn't "say" he would leave a neg, he insinuated it. A reasonable person would be able to see that.

I bet I run about 8 to 1 also. Unfortunately, you can't legislate good manners.

Well, I did report him to ebay just in case he decided to leave a neg. I didn't threaten to do it but I did tell him that I knew he had the card and he was a lying piece of crap. It's been 3 days...he hasn't responded or left a neg.

a simple question... is there a rule that a buyer of an item MUST leave feedback?
  • Mickey71Mickey71 Posts: 4,259 ✭✭✭✭
I've noticed that most do not leave feedback.........especially if it's an expensive card. I've sold cards to the biggest collectors that we all know and they did not leave feedback.

Of course a buyer doesn't have to leave feedback. There are some sellers who don't do it either. Whether buyer or seller, I always have left positive feedback, and I have to say 98% of the time, the other party involved has done it for me.

The way I see it is there are so many scammers, low lifes, inconsiderate jerks, bad business people etc. out there, that when a transaction goes smoothly, I think it deserves to be recognized. Even if you buy/sell a lot of stuff, it's not that hard or time consuming to do. Failing to do that is a total d*** move IMO.

There are lots of reasons for a buyer not to leave feedback. My most common reason is that the transaction was not pleasant for one reason or another. Either the item took too long to arrive or was not packaged well etc. Its not enough of a reason to leave a negative or a neutral but still does not warrant a positive in my opinion.

I have also neglected to leave feedback on some high value items simply because I did not want the purchase tied to me through feedback.

I do see alot of buyers not leaving feedback anymore. It does not matter that much when you have alot of feedback, but when you are small positive feedback helps. I never e-mail asking for it, but it does not take that much time to leave.
  • i have to agree with aric.... i sometimes opt not to "neg" a seller or leave a neutral even though the sale didn't rate a positive...
usually it revolves around a dissatisfaction... typically if i think something shady has taken place, but i can't prove it....

example: i win high dollar item for a lower than expected winning bid... even i'm surprised that my bid held up... i pay & seller emails that item has shipped... even provides delivery confirmation #...
days go by.... weeks go by.... item never shows... no activity on USPS tracking site... i contact seller and he immediately offers refund and doesn't seem to be sad that item never made it... now i'm suspicious...
i assume that 1) he decided to not sell for such a low price, so he print a label to generate a delivery # and then fakes the whole shipping thing... or 2) he sold the item for more in the day or 2 following the
auction, so he never ships to me and just waits for me to complain to him about non-delivery....

he's same from ebay because he can "prove" he shipped by showing them the delivery confirmation number... maybe he eats a couple of bucks in fake mailing costs, but makes a hundred more not completing
    the deal with me...

many dealers offer the same card for sale on multiple sites and sell to the highest winning bid of the 2... or they may also drag the card to a show right after the auction ends to see if somebody will beat the winning bid...
