and for my imaging count i would like the record to reflect that i do not directly associate quantity with quality
probably just the opposite >< (for me)

It also depends on why you are shooting. Shooting for yourself may not take many shots, doing it for others may take more. I have have weeks where I do 6-8k shots, none of my own stuff and the customers may need a minimum of 4 shots a coins, plus screwups. Those add up quick. I used to shoot more, but as I have improved I am more efficient and shoot less.

do you think tethering will help reduce image count? i have tried it and it seems like image quality is lost from the camera to the monitor resulting in images that may appear worse than they are.
i have read the more money spent for tethering the better the results. but i am not very experienced in this. i think i may not have tethered properly. i was using av cables that came with the camera.
i really should be spending more time and effort to become a good tetherer since it would significantly reduce the time factor because i could just crop the image on the screen and paste into my
program and then just flip the coin and then rinse and repeat.

I think tethering is great for what I need. I don't want to come back to a coin. Being able to see it lets me know if I have a good shot or not. Then I can move on to the next coin and rarely need to reshoot. I think tethering really reduces time spent imaging.

<< <i>Replaced the shutter a few years ago at around 8,000, probably another 8-10K on the new one. I'll have to check. >>
replaced shutter at 8k or 80k? Most shutters are rated above 100,000. My D200 (the backup now) is at 134,413 shots now. I think the shutter is losing it.
I bought my first, late last year. I'll never go back.

share which camera you are using?
i'm sure you've posted that dozens of times, 1 more maybe?

<< <i>Not even a DSL-R any more.

are you sure. the ads below the camera specs say Digital SLR.
i mean not that i care one way or the other, just an observation. it doesn't matter to me since i was inquiring about the shutter-less part.
but in any event thanks for the link for my inquiry

I think this is where cameras will go. Not everyone will agree. There was an early resistance to CD's.

<< <i>There is no mechanical shutter, Bob. Sony uses a translucent mirror technology. No jitter, faster fps (no matter for coins), other advantages.

the more this conversation goes on the more i seem to remember reading and/or hearing about a digital sensor thing that would then send/transfer the image to the card or whatever
when no shutter was used. just saying that it does seem that may be where cameras are heading, if they aren't already there.
on the subject of cameras/sensors/lenses etc have you guys seen this. it is only 3:27 but imo is the most amazing night imaging i have seen to-date. there is another video that shows how far away the
heat can be detected and it looks like FOR MILES!

Can you change lenses? or is it fixed?

<< <i>Well I'm all for it. Certainly something to think about when my camera gets fried.
Can you change lenses? or is it fixed? >>
It's a D-SLR in every way except for the "reflex" thing. So yes, you can use the full line of Sony, Minolta, Konica lenses.
By the time your camera gets fried there will be many better cameras.
Lance.
forget the cameras, iphones, pads, desktops, notebooks etc
just pluck out one of your eyes and buy one of these

8,000 for the first shutter on my D80. Replacing the camera at the time wasn't prudent, so I got it fixed. Damn thing's supposed to last 50,000, but it sure didn't. Needless to say, I was rather cheesed. Fortunately, the Nikon repair center is only a 40 minute drive. I'm at 15,189 right now. Not sure if that's just the new shutter or both together.

Sure glad I'm surfin' the net today!

For what it is worth,
I have well over 10,000 4x5 transparencies photographed on a 4x5 view camera in the field and a cost of 3 - 5 dollars per image .....
Wow, things have changed ...............
in 2003 (i was 25) i was imaging real estate with a sony digital camera that could hold a decent amount of high-res images and the digital camera had been out for several years prior to that
also had broadband at home then.
it was too bad i didn't know about cropping to reduce image size which caused longer than necessary loading times for the management site ><
