Thanks BBCE :)

So with the monthly special of $5.25 going on, I wanted to send in some 1981 Topps seeing how the 9's even bring in decent dollars and with the wax box being $100 is affordable. Thinking it could be very possible to make back my money and more if I send in the right cards for grading. Well I contacted BBCE via email and spoke with Rick and mentioned that I was a member of the Collectors Universe forum in hopes of possibly getting a discount. Without me having to even ask any further aside from just mentioning this board, Rick went ahead and threw in the 10% discount. How cool is that? BBCE sure knows how to treat its loyal customers.

So I just got my box a few minutes ago. The whole day I was ready to rip into it. Actually, I couldn't even wait! - then I open my package and its the most beautiful wax box I have ever seen. lol - Seriously, the thing is in such amazing shape that I decided not open this one but will order 1 more. Well that and I'm also trying to collect all the 80's wax boxes. Purchased an 83 from the last group rip that I still kept intact and have the 87,88 and 89 as well from the local show down here.

Anyways, I just wanted to give some awesome props to BBCE and there excellent service and loyalty to its members on here. If anyone from here reads this and decided to purchase something from them, then I did my part as far as spreading the good word in hopes on giving them a little extra free publicity and business among with continued success. Thanks Rick and BBCE. You guys rock!

  • That is the box you want to rip. A mint box could have mint cards. I never rip packs from an abused box.

Marc....it clearly states on the box 30 cents per pack. I think BBCE overcharged you. I would call back and ask for a refund....

This is really making me want to get one of those. If I could get one that clean, I'd probably do it.

    Hey Marc,

Thanks for sharing your BBCE experience with us. That box does look really nice, but to me all the unopened boxes look really nice. Good luck in getting your 80's box run. Are you going for only Baseball wax boxes or are you going to do other sports or types (i.e., cello boxes, rack boxes)?

what are the PSA 9's that have value.
I have a box of 81's from vending I got 30 years ago and I have never even considered going through it.

  • cpamike - Thanks but I dont need luck, I need money. lol. The only one that would be a pain to get purchase is 1980but the 10% discount should help. Other than that, 1982 goes for the same as 83 ($140) and Ill pick up the 84 along with the 85 at the same time. Those are very easy and affordable to obtain. Yes, I only collect baseball. I have absolutely 1% interest in football - that 1% is a 1981 Topps Joe Montana PSA 9 and a Marino Rookie 84 in a 10. Other than that, nothing else.

DCanfield - Thanks. It will stay sealed. I'm not joking when I say I was ready to tear open today. This sucker is just too nice to open up. Absolutely blew me away.

Jimrad - Check out the Bench's , The Rose's, The Raines, The Fernandos, The Gibsons, The Ozzie Smiths, The Reggie Jacksons - They all pull in decent amount in 9's. Anthing else in low pop youll make out decent. I was thinking of busting my 1983 Topps wax box but after a quick review on completed listings on eBay, its crystal clear that the ONLY 9's that pull in are the BIG 3.

    Hiya Foo

Congratulations on your pickup and good luck pulling a few 10s!

It's amazing how clean that box is - the packs will look fresh as the day they were printed.

I'm looking forward to a few scans.

The Pete Rose #180 is a very popular and in demand card. In PSA 9 it is valuable -- in PSA 10, it goes for over $1,000
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

81s are a crapshoot when it comes to grading. I think 4sc has given up on them as well. image

I'm hopeful on the vending this time around. I figure at $40, it will be a fun and inexpensive bust. Crossing my fingers for the elusive Fernando.

    Thanks,

  • Hey David, I agree - 81's are inexpensive for the most part or at least compared to the other years surrounding it (80, 79 etc - 82, 83)

I still have my box sealed but by all means, if you decide to open your 81 Topps wax box, let us know. Hopefully you'll get it from the same case and pull out some clean cards. Kind of also interested in seeing how the condition is. As I mentioned earlier, if you send in the right ones for gading - you can come out on top and I don't find that to be too difficult if you do a little homework.
  • I've purchase several 1981 Topps vending boxes from BBCE to make sets and have had good luck. Cards had sharp corners, centering was both good and bad. No gradeable Fernando, but real crisp cards. Was happy enough that I have thought about buying some more vending to make more sets. Very reasonable price on an underrated year.

Good luck Foo with your wax quest. I too am working on same project, although on a bigger scale, and am currently working on sports room to showcase it. Hopefully will be done by end of year.

  • i just got 2 boxes of 81 topps wax from BBCE - ordered after reading Foo3112's original post. Sadly my boxes are not as pristine looking as Foo's - they are shrink wrapped but the BBCE sticker does not say from sealed case and the boxes are definately weathered - should i rip these or are the packs going to be rough and yield low quality?

    Any experience shared is appreciated.

Not much more to say about the Team at BBCE. It all starts from the top. Steve (and his team) provide excellent service and always willing to help out. As a loyal customer of BBCE for the last several years, I am 38 and had been out of the card collecting for a while, Steve was such a huge help.

  • To be clear I was asking for advice on expectation of the wax pack quality based on the appearance of the box. It was not a critique of the BBCE service.

The condition of the box does not always correlate with the condition of the packs within the box. You might find mint packs in a box that has some wear to it.

No 81s Topps from me tonight as far as cards go, but I will post some pics of the boxes and packs. My scanner is currently 'not available' so the pics are from my phone. I'm uploading them to photobucket now.

Overall, vending was more centered and sharper than the wax (hard to believe). The box looked clean. There was no 'from a sealed case' designation so I did not take as many pics as Foo took. I'm sending in roughly 40 between the wax and vending box. Vending yielded a gradeable Rose and Carew (no Fernando) as far as star power. Wax yielded a slightly OC Fernando that I'm planning to submit along with a gradeable Gary Carter, Dale Murphy, and Eddie Murray. There were a couple of POP 0 in 10s that I'll take a shot with (Hector Cruz and Frank Tanana).

The funnest box was the 81 Donruss. Collation was crazy. I do have some card pics on those to show what type of run I had.

  • Holy Cow!! That is just insane!!

You must have a 10 in there somewhere right?

I did notice that the Pete Rose's bottom left corner have little dings to them. Did all of the packs have the same issue?

The Brett's are by far the cleanest of the bunch. Most all of the Rose's have the left corner dings. I'm going to send in around 8 of the best star cards and see how they grade. I have some GEM commons but I'm not planning to submit those due to low demand.

Yes, I'm serious. At least on this box it had a good run of stars (Phillies, Yankees, Dodgers). I've had boxes filled with Mariners and Indians. LOL. I do not remember this type of collation when I was busting these in 81, but the last 3-4 boxes I've ripped have all had this same pattern.

I wish the Reggie's were better centered.

BTW, for you Garvey fans, there were a handful of them and they were all OC.

    Thanks,

  • Reggies in PSA 9 sell for about $6. No 10's in the last 3 months sold but unless it looks perfect, I would send in the Reggies. A Brett in a 10 - someone was trying to sell one for about $44 but it didn't sell. Doesn't mean its not in demand but they were probably just asking a little too much. I cant wait to see your 81 Topps however. That vending box looks really good. Please keep us updated. I don't care if you have to take pictures with your phone.

From someone who opened a ton of those '81 Donruss back in the day, the collation was terrible and what you experienced was pretty spot on.

I am not surprised to see this at all.

Agreed on the vending. About 25 on each end were damaged which is typical with vending as well.
