Unofficial Rumor on the First Spouses

you know how this goes....
and they unnamed sources have been a lot more tight lipped in the past year.
All I have is "sometime this year" which goes without saying,
and
a reminder that 1. they are mandated by Congress and 2. they are still a money maker
Even the presidential dollars are mandated by Congress, but I guess the work around there is that they are being made in special rolls and not for circulation.
I am guessing the series does not come to an end this year.

<< <i>For more public interest they should have done these backwards. I'm sure Jackie kennedy, lady bird etc would have been of more interest to casual collectors and the general public >>
The first ones started with pretty quick sellouts at max mintage. I suspect we would be in the doldrums anyway no matter which way they went.

True. I bought my max allotment when the first ones were released @$410. Now that they're $1000+, my last purchase was Mary Todd Lincoln.
I may get back into it when they get to Eleanor Roosevelt and later, provided gold hasn't gone crazy.

---------------------------------Announcement---------------------------------
The United States Mint has encountered problems with producing some of the 2012-dated First Spouse Gold Coins. Once the problems are resolved and final trial strikes approved, the First Spouse Gold Coins will be struck at the United States Mint at West Point and bear the “W” mint mark.
The West Point facility has production capacity to strike all four coins in proof and uncirculated qualities. As soon as we are certain the quality of these coins meets the standards you have come to expect, we will announce on-sale dates for each one. We apologize for the delay in releasing these coins.
2012 might be the low mintage year all the speculators are hoping for.If gold soars, 2013 should do very well.

The US Mint charges way too much for them in the first place. It only stands to reason that sales have been lackluster at best in recent years. Your typical collector simply cannot afford them and as such, they become a specialty item with a very limited audience which means limited "flipability".
Loosely translated, no market.
However, since they are mandated by law, I don't really believe that the program will be affected since the mintages are pretty much already mint to order.
Will this series ever be popular? Sure! Just as popular as the State Quarters.
The name is LEE!

now that this is out, the unofficial rumor is that it was unnamed and undescribed die problems.
they do have to come out in order and all one needs to have happen is some problem with the first issue of the year and everything is held up.
Drop the prices to melt and I'd be a buyer. Heck, that's all they are worth IMHO.
Why should the Gov't make money off it's citizens? THere should be no profit
involved. Okay, add the cost of manufacturing but that's it.
No more, no less.
Once they get enough gold in the citizens hands to make a difference they can
recall it all like they did in '33. Then in ten or twenty years make it legal to own
again and THEN the series will be highly sought after!

Does the original congressional bill say they can only be offered in year they are struck or are they offered for 1 year or til sell out??
<< <i>Can they sell 2012 gold spouse coins in 2013??

They are selling 2011s in 2012. They may be restricted from minting in the incorrect year. Not sure what the law says though.

There was never any decision to end these, only to end business strike production and only strike proofs and uncirculated for the collector sets until the series ends.

They should start making the Prezzies out of gold now. Call it the old geezer series.
