First Cent to Mars!

In case you missed it...

http://photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov/catalog/PIA16131

Not sure if any toning occurring would be considered AT/NT...

(Btw, tech savvy people can follow the mars rover exploits on @marscuriosity)

it kind of boggles my mind that 1,000-10,000 years from now this coin will be on display at a museum (alien or otherwise image)

The specific coin, provided by MAHLI's (Mars Hand Lens Imager ) principal investigator, Ken Edgett, is a 1909 "VDB" penny. That was the first year Lincoln pennies were minted and the centennial of Abraham Lincoln's birth. The VDB refers to the initials of the coin's designer, Victor D. Brenner, which are on the reverse side. Brenner based the coin's low-relief portrait of Lincoln on a photograph taken Feb. 9, 1864, by Anthony Berger in the Washington, D.C. studio of Mathew Brady.

Makes you look at Mars differently, knowing there's a coin on the surface.

It would be nice to have a special "Mars" TPG holder for 1909 VDB cents.

  • I think a Roman coin with god Mars (assuming there is such a thing) would have been a bit neater. Then again, with his penchant for war, maybe not such a good idea image

sending up a little disc with a human with a spear, or spearing another human might not be the best first message... image

Hmmm. Hopefully it's well protected. After all, why do you think Mars Red?
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    The name is LEE!

    Hello image

Even the best of messages can get messed up. Look at Voyager/V'ger in Star Trek The Motion Picture...or Nomad looking for Jackson Roykirk in Star Trek the original series image

    Best wishes,

  • So cool. Wish the media would've made a bigger deal... would love to see more folks involved.
Having two coins.... one protected, and one exposed to the elements would have been neat to see the effect on the copper..... maybe a time lapse?

Here's a post I made in February about this. Included near the top of the thread is a link that gives some more info on the coin including a close-up (and other information about calibrating the MAHLI instruments, including a cartoon character).
