$8800 for a coin that was what, $6 in the 80s?

Wow! 1989 Congressional Half dollar MS70

Having a Pop of 4 certainly seems to help the price.

I would have had the #1 set in that particular registry, but I recently turned in to PCGS the Pop 1 George Washington 1982 Half Dollar Commem (for a fraction of what that pop 4 just sold at) because it was not a true 70 (the coin was regraded at MS68). Also, I am waiting for this Congress Half Dollar to get to around $1,000 before I might consider picking it up to finish off the complete set in 70 grade. In my opinion, I give it 50-50 that I'll have a "70" grade coin around that level (or even less) in the next 12-18 months.

As always, just my 2 cents.

I never had it on a saved search as there are so few of them, yes I have a complete set. This series is dead in common grade (MS68/69) coin value and just astronomical prices for the TOP POP coins in the early and mid years. Not so in this century's coins as manufacturing methods have improved that much.
Somebody wanted into the top five group it seems.

Not for nothing, but I can think of at least 2 or 3 other coins that I'd much rather have sitting in my collection for that amount of cash.

And they wouldn't have to be #1 in anyone's registry set to make me feel all warm and fuzzy all over!

Its a 10 dollar coin in a 7000 dollar holder. I have pity for the guy who bought it. Do you really think the services can tell the difference between a 70 and a 69?? Its all a game, nothing more.

    Sure it is.

I really think they can. Do I think it makes the coin that much more valuable? That's another question.
Let's try not to get upset.

If they could really tell, then they should each go out and buy tons of modern stuff and submit to make millions. Its a game man.
  • With the supply of them out there, it will not be long and there will be population of 8 and then 12 and then 16 and on and on.

With the now motivating potential of scoring 7,950.00 on a 50.00 purchase I'm fairly positive the trys at 70 will greatly increase.

PCGS loves those trys so do the shareholders.

I am planning to see over the next few years how many nice large cents I can get for $8800.
Most will be in the Fine to Very Fine range, with nice surfaces, so acquiring them will take a while.
