Jefferson Nickel experts- which DDO is this?

cmerlo1cmerlo1 Posts: 7,960 ✭✭✭✭✭
I picked this 1938-D at the B&M today- definitely a DDO. It matches the CONECA DDO-1 description to a T, including the die scratch thru LIBERTY, but without a photo, I can't confirm. Can anyone confirm that this is DDO-1?

    cmerlo1,

I have never seen or owned a 1938-D DDO, only DDRs. Looking at VarietyVista, they only list 2 DDOs. DDO-001 is described as "strong" doubling with that die scratch running through LIBERTY. You picture shows pretty much what is being described. The DDO-002 is described as "very light spread" with no other markers to go by. If your coin is DDO-001 with "strong" doubling, we might not even notice DDO-002 with "very light spread"! I think you picked up the DDO-001 given the die scratch. Nice find! You can always send it to James Wiles for confirmation/attribution.

Thanks for the replies! The coin is resting comfortably in an acetone bath, then will go to the plastic factory when I attend the Dallas ANA next month.

Hoping the acetone does its job on that black spot on the Rev.

Unfortunately, only the TPG in Colorado Springs will designate this coin.

The real problem is... finding accurate designation info is madening... the books on these and RPM's have different number designators than those of the only TPG that designate. I submitted approximately 100 or more varieties a couple of years ago with numbers I got out of the books only to get completely different numbers from the TPG. CONECA has these coins designated, but mostly without pictures. Good luck using that mess to get an accurate designation.

BTW, probably the handful of folks that would be a buyer of a coin like this have already posted to this message because it's not a coin that the masses would look at... ever. Our host has in the past made comments that coins like this will never be designated by them due to the lack of visable spread on the DDO. That's a good news/bad news scenario... the good news is, these coins can still be found. The bad news is... they can be found because very few people care to look.

I still think the best coin to look for is the 39D DDO1... it has the largest spread and can be cherrypicked rather easily.
