Here's a neat bogus Bust Half. Notice the backwards S in PLURIBUS in the first picture and the
double lettered edge CENTS on the edge..

    Yep. Neat.

    I like it! image

    It's a contemporary 19th century job, right?

Worth as much as a real one in that grade would be, then, I'd imagine? If not a little bit more?

Nice! Davignon's CCCHD lists it as a 1A, die struck, in german silver or copper. Only three varieties for 1824. Two are very scarce. This variety is common and always low grade.

Diagnostics are right. Backward S, 24 lower that 18, 8 is small, blunt arrowheads. U in United touches wing, small round 0 in 50c.

    Pretty cool.

Neat bogie! I had not considered the edge lettering before on counterfeits.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.
  • I just noticed the double lettered edge recently. I wasn't aware of it myself...

    Hey,

Thanks for sharing your recent find. These contemporary counterfeits are really interesting, when you consider why they came into existence and the trouble it took to make them. The general public had to really be on the ball to not get fooled by some of these.

The public was fooled all the time.

Most of these contemporary CBH's circulated freely, often in greater number than real ones. Store clerks had to have rudimentary knowledge. So the fakes were often pretty good.

As long as no one objected, they were as good as the real deal. Which is maybe where we're going with modern Chinese counterfeits. If you can't tell it's fake well, then it's genuine.
