Whats your take on the Heritage prices realized?

It looked to me like most pieces were going surprisingly cheap. But perhaps the estimates were just very optimistic?

I watched the Columbian gold which mostly seemed to sell at or below estimate.

The French coins were very cheap for some and incredibly expensive for others. For example some of the 19th C. proof minors were just given away, I almost started bidding on them just becaue they were so cheap and I don't even collect French. But some of the 19th C. minors in high mint state (66 and 67) had runaway prices, 10-20 times current values.

The German States seemed all over the place, I had gone after the 1611 Taler in MS63, high estimate of $1200 with a bid of $2000, and it wound up with someone else for $2200. And then I won the 1752 off metal striking of the Lubeck dreiling for the opening bid. I guess the difference is the dreiling was only AU55, but those are really scarce coins so I was happy to get it.

The British was another area that seemed weak, all the Vicky Florins went for 1/2 of estimate or so, but they were all low mint state, 61-63 so that wouldn't get most people hyped up. The one or two pieces I really wanted got chased up so high I was out of the running early, for example the 1887 Young Head shilling in PF65 went to $8800 with the juice 1902 low tide penny in 66 RD ran up to $3290 including the juice. But I did pick up a couple of pretty scarce proofs for very reasonable prices, not perfect pieces but decent, the 1853 Vicky 1/2 d in PF65 (but really a 63-64 in my view) and the 1936 PF64RB farthing. I had passed up some earlier pieces that went cheap thinking I would have a shot at the 1902 so there were some relative bargains to be had.

So all in all I thought it was very weak for prices, how were your experiences?

I see divergence between mint state and below. MS pieces carried a premium (also on Goldberg's) while AUs (including buyer's premium) were flat.

For what I interested, I thought the price is pretty high. I only got one coin.

Yes, Jeff my sentiments as well. THings like G3 guineas in so-so condition went cheap, nicer proofs like the 1887 1/- YH not! One nice florin that went cheap because of its lower mint state was the 1867. I think I was bidding against you (sorry) on the 36 1/4d AND the 53 1/2d. Don't like to do that and would not have interferred (sp?).

That LT 02 was a crazy price IMO and think very very nice pieces can be had for fractions of that.
Overall I got spanked and did not get to bid on the Biafra pieces as I was at work with a crazy computer.

That is OK as I have had some rather high coin bills of late anyway!

  • I can only speak to a subset since I watched just Bolivia-Brazil. It seemed that prices in general were a little lower than I would have expected, except for the few exceptional coins with totally blew away the estimates (like the 1820 4000 reis for 130k).

Specifically for 960 reis, there were 4 of them up for auction last night, all of them rarities in the series, but all of them problem coins - cleaned, ex-jewelry, broken edge & cleaned, dinged edge. I estimated what retail price might be and that's right at what they all went for, which means I was the underbidder on every one, hah. Just missed them, but didn't feel like stretching on those.

Honestly I was fully expecting the prices on these to go well over retail, as they often do, so I was a little surprised to see the prices close where they did.

I thought prices were somewhat on the low side, but not too much. Too bad, since I am unable to play. image

The 1911 short-ray Caballito Peso (Mexico) in NGC MS64 sold for $7050!!! An incredible price driven by registry mania, I'm sure. It's not even the finest graded.

And the 1914 Caballito Peso in NGC MS63 sold for an equally impressive $5875. For comparison, my PCGS MS61, a typical MS grade for this date, sold for $2645 in January 2011.

Another coin that I was following that did very well is the 1862 French 10F essai in gold, which sold for $6463 on an estimate of $6000-8000. But in my opinion, that estimate was unrealistically high since the last one (January 2012, same grade but PCGS holder) sold for $4600.

I went 2 for 2, but it was expensive.

I won two mint state pieces today (will post separately) which were in line with recent trends. Will be interesting to see results next week in the internet only auctions.

The couple of higher priced items I was chasing went for more than I was comfortable with. One was 2x the lower estimate. The second was 30% higher than the higher estimate.

I have seen some weakness compared to the estimate in lower level coins that are readily available. You still have to put up a fight for those nice coins not seen often.

Prices are low but that $2,500 limit on credit cards has been keeping off...image

One other factor in my area of collecting was a very large selection compared with prior auctions. Perhaps many pieces in one auction softened the bids for more common pieces.

I did notice a surprising number of ChMS Austrian and German States talers, but none of them jumped out at me as must-have. HA also had two raw Anglo-Saxon hammered pennies that caught my eye: Offa and Alfred, both non-portrait, both in unexciting condition. Their prices realized suggests that they really weren't so nice. I might have made a play for them, but they didn't look so nice from the pictures nor did I know what the cataloguer meant as "almost EF". Is that US standard, or world?

It seems to me that the prettiest and most unusual things still do very well. For more pedestrian material, it's hit or miss, and bargains can be had.
