What player has the most awkward cards of all time?

What player, as a collection, has the most awkward looking poses on his cards, ever?

I think it's easy.

Roger Maris.

'58-68, he had at least 7 awkward cards. Here are five of my favorites.

#5: Passive Aggressive:

#4: Igor

#3: I See The Light

#2: Isn't This The "Old Timers Game"?

#1: I Thought All Little Girls Liked Candy... And Lazy Eyes...

the guy was getting death threats in the mail like every day. After 1961 he seemed a little sad in his pics.

I know, I'm a big Maris fan. I feel sorry for the guy, but he was looking like this way before that. However, his '59 card is a stunner...

yeah, but you can see it more in his eyes I think.
  • In 63, he looks really sad in that card. In 65, he just looks old and tired. That was also the beginning of the end as far as career stats go. Luckily he joined the Cardinals in his last 2 years (67,68 and helped lead them to 2 world series were they actually won one! My favorite from him has always been the 61.

I agree with you both. Handyman- It IS in his eyes. Just a sadness. Foo- It was just so much on him.

Who wants to be compared to Mickey Mantle while playing on the same team with him?

But let's open this up to other cards! Show me your awkwards!

Hey!!! What's wrong with Wally's cards?

He was my favorite growing up. In fact, if any of you ever run across his new book "Moon Shots", check out page 226. Yes, that's me!

I remember talking to an executive of Upper Deck (I believe Jay McCracken was his name) at the Upper Deck sponsored Field of Dreams show in Dyersville, Iowa in 1991 and asked him specifically about this card and was it done on purpose. He looked me in the eye, laughed and said "of course it was!!" Oddly enough he was buying a large stack of Leaf black gold parallels from me at the time as he was trying to complete that set. I always thought it odd but cool at the same time that this big shot with Upper Deck was working on a competitors set.
I am on a budget and I am not afraid to use it!!

And if I remember correctly, the kid in the picture is actually Gary's kid brother who was in High School at the time!

Yes it is his high school brother. I would have loved to have been there the first time Gary Pettis saw the card and how it turned out LOL

Back to the OP's original point, I have always been a Tony Gwynn collector and I thought he has some really lousy photos taken for his baseball cards.

The 1983 Topps is just a picture of his ass
The 1983 Donruss has the print dot on the tip of his nose
The 1985 Topps looks like he's looking at a solar eclipse

of course, there's any card of Mario Mendoza attempting to hit a ball.

or any of the current Dodgers attempting likewise.

That 83 Topps Mike Armstrong is frickin' hilarious!!!!!!!!!! That one got a belly laugh out of me!!!!!!!

I have that set, but I have never noticed that card.

Look at the main picture on the card for about 5 seconds, then glance down at the little picture in the circle. I laugh everytime!!

There's also an N172 Old Judge card of Hoss Radbourn where Hoss is doing the same thing.
