Please help me designate this 1876-CC Trade Dollar

Can someone teach me the difference between the different obverses and reverses for the 76-CC Trade Dollars?

I just got a great deal on this piece, but don't know how to ID it. It has immaculate original surfaces, with semi-PL obverse fields (as is typical for the date), and nice cartwheel left on the reverse (more than the pictures suggest).

Without getting into sub varieties, all you have to do is look at the end of the ribbon by L in LIBERTY on the obverse and under the eagle's claw above 900 on the reverse.

Small tiny ribbon end: type one
No berry under claw: type two

Here's a good example of a type two obverse with large ribbon ends:

And here's a good example of a type one reverse with berry under the claw:

Check out the first image in crypto's set.

This is a nice type 1 obverse, type 2 reverse. The more common of the 76-CC's but heck any 76-CC is not very common.

Beautiful circulated Trade dollar, I like the look of that coin.

As mentioned by previous posters, that is a Type I/II example, the most common obverse/reverse combination. There are three types: I/I; I/I Double Die Reverse; and I/II. I wrote an article on the different types for the Gobrecht Journal a couple of years ago. In my research I found that the percentages of the different combinations still surviving is as follows:

    I/II 59 percent
    I/I DDR 33 percent
    I/I 8 percent

However, as noted the 76-CC is scarce to start with, so all three combinations are scarce in an absolute sense.

DDR it seems crazy that the 76-CC 1/1 DDR is really 33%, considering only 30 have been graded by PCGS. It doesn't seem too far off from reality however, considering PCGS has only graded about 130 non DDR's. That's how scarce these are.

Goldeneye that's a great looking coin and you did very well, it went really cheap.

Do we have a new TD collector in our midst!? The growth in number of TD collectors is increasing logarithmically. image

Here are my non-scientific ebay stats for 1876cc type 1/1. Note this doesn't account for quick BIN's that might go undetected.

    Wide/micro -cc:
Averages about 2-3 appearances a year on eBay.

    Normal CC:
I have seen a total of 2, ever, on eBay, one being a problem coin

As for rarity, I can't share any more information. If someone else wanted to share it would be up to them.

Edit: I'd be curious to hear what others think about my ebay estimates above, especially those who have been looking for much, much longer than I have...so take my numbers with a grain of salt.

<< <i>Thank you, so how does one differentiate between the two, any pics? >>

Here's a PCGS XF45 example of the 76cc type I/I wide/micro c c, spaced 1.2mm apart. Note, this is the reverse die also used on some of the 73cc and 74cc's (curiously, not in '75 though). This was purchased raw off eBay in early 2012.

...and here's a PCGS VF25 example of the 76cc type I/I "normal" CC. Also from eBay and crossed at grade from an NGC holder.

To be fair while there have been 3 or so appearances this year I can only recall 3-4 in the previous 4 on the 76cc wide CC. I am jealous of your VF25 coin

I had that one on my watchlist. You got it for a great price, but I was concerned about the small X on the last S in States. It should grade a no problem 40/45,but you never know until you try. Good Luck!!!!

Great coin, I see the identifications have been thoroughly discussed already so nothing to add here, but ouch on that graffiti on the reverse image
  • This was an interesting read. Can't add anything but - I designate it "very attractive" image

    Best wishes and thanks,

Very interesting. I think a complete set of all varieties of all denoms of 1876-CC would be neat.

It would take 6 dimes that PCGS does.image

The double dime would kill that set, no fun

Nice set of varieties. I have admired your set of TD's for a long time.

Although your choice in Football teams is questionable.image
