OT Rant --- Post Office wants I.D.

CaptHenwayCaptHenway Posts: 32,749 ✭✭✭✭✭
I have held my P.O. Box since 1986. Got a notice in it today along with the bill for the next rent period demanding that I show them two forms of I.D.

Acceptable identification includes:
a. Valid driver's license
b. State non-driver's license
c. Armed forces or government ID
etc.

Question One: Haven't these jamokes ever heard of the Grandfather Clause?

Question Two: What the heck is a "State non-driver's license"?

Question One: Haven't these jamokes ever heard of the Grandfather Clause? Does not apply.

Question Two: What the heck is a "State non-driver's license"? ID for a person who cannot qualify for a drivers licence.

    << <i>Question Two: What the heck is a "State non-driver's license"? >>

Most, if not all, state Department of Motor Vehicles issue official state identity cards that are similar to a drivers license but are strictly for ID purposes. Since drivers licenses are now the standard photo identification this is a service for those that can't drive or choose not to drive.

I would complain vigorously and go outside and picket. I mean having to show ID means you are likely being disenfranchised and they are attempting to supress your right to fully participate in the P.O. Box process. image

Regulations relating to PO Box. I believe the regs for a Commercial Mail Receiving Agency are similar (see link above).

    4.3.2 Verification
[8-14-08] An application for Post Office box service may not be approved until the applicant's identity and current permanent physical address where he or she resides or conducts business is verified. Customers who apply online for a Post Office box do not receive their box number and keys (or combination number) until verification is complete and the application is approved. Verification criteria are as follows:

    a. At the time of application, applicants must present two items of valid identification; one item must contain a photograph of the applicant. Social Security cards or credit cards and birth certificates are unacceptable as identification. The following are acceptable identification:

    1. Valid driver's license or state non-driver's identification card.

    2. Armed forces, government, university, or recognized corporate identification card.

    3. Passport, alien registration card, or certificate of naturalization.

    4. Current lease, mortgage, or deed of trust.

    5. Voter or vehicle registration card.

    6. Home or vehicle insurance policy.

    b. The identification presented must be current. It must contain sufficient information to confirm that the applicant is who he or she claims to be and must be traceable to the bearer.

D.H.S. must have put their two cents worth in on that revision. If and when you go back to renew the box, demand to see the counter clerk's photo ID as proof that they are an official Postal employee. And then ask for their supervisor, and demand to see their photo ID as well. image

I don't see why its a problem this is to prevent people from distancing themselves from a physical address while trying to commit fraud such as is prevalent with invent of online shopping. If you have nothing to hide the system is there to protect and prevent people from getting ripped off.

  • I went through the same issue with my post office. They know me; been a customer there for years. I was told it was due to an amendment to the Patriot Act to ensure individuals with PO Boxes were actually the individuals they were registered to.

Anyhow, I just got my first PO box last week. I had to remind to the postal clerk that she needed to see my two IDs.
My two sons apparently don't need IDs. My wife will need them to be added.

I made a return to Home Depot a few weeks ago. I spend around 50k a year there, so i seem to be there a few times a week. The return clerk was giving me a hard time cause my drivers liscense had been expired for the last 2 years and did not want to process it. What struck me odd besides not realizing my drivers liscense was expired 2 years was the fact i could charge all the merchandise without a valid id but to return it was a no no. LOL

Two forms of ID . I have a drivers license .Not in military , I have no military ID .
No passport cause I never left the country . Voters cards don't count .
Social Security card states 'Not valid for ID"
So I might show them my Cocealed Carry ID with photo ,
but that would send them into panic and ask me to leave
the premises . Just another nail in the proverbial coffin of death .

  • I went through the same issue when I got my PO box. The post office that I used was on a military reservation protected by federal police and in order to get federal benefits that governmental department that has control over the facility issues a government picture id card based upon other federal documents.

But the really bizarre thing about this is that the local post would not take the id card from this particular government agency but they would take my state DL, insurance card, and voting ID. I think that they were looking for an id with a local address.

When I asked why they wouldn't take the governmental picture id the only answer that I got was "Because that is what I told you I needed!!!"

You have a constructive trust and the new notice is a novation (innovation). You should have refused for cause the novation timely (within 3 days) and immediately made the same traditional payment for six more months on the old box.

It would have been much more convincing had you an evidence repository in place. Read the example clerk instruction carefully. You get the original presentment Refused for Cause back to the presenter with a copy of the clerk instruction and the original clerk instruction to the US clerk with a copy of the R4C for your evidence repository.

Here are some Examples. This suitor ordered the clerk to reinstate his driver license.- successfully!

Maybe I'm just more easygoing--I just don't consider asking for a form of valid ID to rent a PO box a really big deal or an intrusion on my personal liberties...I suppose in that regard I agree with the "Really A Thread for This" group...but carry on! image

I can understand why they want good ID for a PO box. If there's a fraud and something is sent to a PO they need to link it to a person. Although having the box for so long makes it seem silly but if they do it for all PO boxes then I'd be ok with it.

The one issue I see is that it said you need 2 forms of ID and:

    Acceptable identification includes:
    a. Valid driver's license
    b. State non-driver's license
    c. Armed forces or government ID etc.

The average person has either A or B and probably not both A + B.
So they need a second piece of government ID. Assuming they weren't in the military that means they need a passport or to show their social security card. I don't know of many other government IDs that the average person has. Some people don't have passports so they're stuck to use social security cards. Social security numbers are something I'd rather not share.
