Calling all Florida collectors!

Just seeing how many collectors we have in the great state of Florida! I'm in the Tampa area and they have a very very small monthly show here. The card shops are horrible as well lol.

Do any of you attend shows in your area? Do you set up as well?

I spend my winters in Fort Myers/Naples area. I've never looked for a show or card shop and have no idea if they even exist here.
  • I live in Riverview! I don't even know of any card shops in Tampa anymore, with the exception of Baseball Card Clubhouse way down in Oldsmar.

Oh nice I'm in Brandon. There's a card shop on Dale Mabry but it's overpriced. The show I'm talking about is at the Crown Plaza on MLK and Falkenburg.

I live in Orlando and I am only aware of one card shop that is left. It is over off Orange Blossom Trail and has tons of low end raw cards and does quite a bit of business in the gaming cards like Magic The Gathering and so forth.

I do travel out to the shop from time to time to buy supplies to try and give my business to a local.

There is a card show that runs fairly regularly in the Fashion Square Mall which is off Colonial Drive and it had approximately 40 tables when I visited it once. The mall has been killed by the two other major malls in town so the traffic is very low.

As others have discussed the internet has permanently changed the distribution of trading cards. Neither one of these choices has any of the cards I collect and if they did the pricing strategy would not be as effective as the open market.

  • I now live in the Naples area the last 2 years. After moving from around Albany, NY (with a fairly easy drive to White Plains and even Philly in range) I found the market in SW Florida to be lean. Thank goodness for the internet.

There are a few shops in town - Actually I can think of 2 that I visit about every other month. There are more in my general area but those are a little bit more out of the way than the other 2. Ive noticed that cards stores have prices higher than eBay however for a reasonable offer they will usually discount. Ive walked in and seen people there purchasing so thats good but nothing like when we were kids. I would walk in and see other kids my age ripping away with a Beckett laying open next to them checking prices on every hit if it was even a semi star. Those were the good old days. Today its mostly adults (including myself) who will walk in, purchase a few packs or a box and walk out. I prefer to open up packs in the privacy and comfort of my own home usually with a sitting beer next to me. These business today would not be there if they didnt also sell online, but at the same time if there was no internet, probably more business would also be around.

BTW - If anyone comes near the Miami area or just North of there, hit me up.

Albany to White Plains is about 130 miles.....I drive 6.5 miles to the show and sometimes think it isn't worth the trip.

Refering more to the old Gloria Rothstein shows when she used both floors for dealers (500+??? tables). I've been a couple times in the last 10 years and must admit that I bought zero while attending. Card shows died about 15+ years ago and the general concensus among members of this board is the internet and over-production are two of the main factors leading to their demise. I thought this year's National was a good show yet I didn't feel there were any real bargains. It certainly was a great display of some truly remarkable items. If you pulled out your wallet chances are you were buying something top shelf.

Since shows (and shops) are such an endangered species, I really don't think we can expect more than what they offer. It will never return to the "good old days". My attitude is that if I can see one thing that makes me stop and ask about it then it was worth the effort to go. IMO

    Northwest Dade here.

There is a monthly show at Dania Jai-Alai. I haven't been there yet but a buddy and I are probably going to get a table at the Oct. show.
  • I'm in Indian Rocks Beach now. I used to pick up card savers at a shop in Clearwater before they moved. Even that store seemed to have more comics then cards. I only collect hockey so not much sense in looking for shops. Now 100% of everything picked up online.

George Scott (wrestler) lives in Indian Rocks Beach.....very nice guy. I spoke with him on the phone as I sent a SASE with trading card for him to sign, I included a business/collecting card with my phone number and he hit me up. Cool guy!
    BUYING Frank Gotch T229 Kopec

  • I'm in Fruitland Park(hour north of Orlando, 30 mi. south of Ocala). No shops here. The Fashion Square show sucks. The show that was at Tyrone Square Mall in St. Pete wasn't bad a few years ago.
  • I live in the Miami/South Dade area. Our area shopping options are slim but the Dania card show is actually pretty good. I set up there a few months ago and really enjoyed it. Unfortunatly the 2 shows since that one havent worked out for me time/family wise, but I plan on doing it again next month.
