Sept 4, 2012: Was a little envious of Demo's Old Gold ring, so picked up one for myself today!

Went back to the field that yielded the FE cent and seated dime. Was there for about 2 hours with not much to show. Got at least one IHC and maybe a second, but haven't checked them yet. Things really slowed down and a lot of junky beeps were present. Was about to call it a night but decided to wander around for a few minutes before calling it good. Got a nickel signal at about 5 or so inches. But, instead of a nickel, or more junk a rose-gold-tone ring appeared. A quick inspection revealed no flaking, and the overall color was solid. A good sign! Also, the design looked rather...not professional, so another good indication. Took some pics at home and cleaned it up. For a stamp inside it's a W then XXX. Still trying to research what it stands for, but probably 10, or 12k. Looks late 1800s. Weight is 1.6 grams. HH all!

Took a video of it: Video Here

    nice ring.
i've been wondering, does anyone else detect in your area? you seem to get alot of stuff. many of our areas here, have been and continue to get heavily worked. many of our best locations have been paved over or are owned by "water companies". this is why i have resorted to digging old dumps. many people here do not realize the potential of detecting dumps yet.

Appears to be 30 karat gold ring.

Call up a coin shop and ask them what they are paying for 30K gold.

Be sure to record it for us.

    Thanks,

Haha. Just picture trying to explain that one to the wife. "I swear I was researching the makers mark on a ring"

The W mark apparently is for JR Wood, or probably post 1880 or so it was JR Wood & Sons. Still no idea how the XXX came about.

Some days I'm thick as a brick but as I'm losing more and more of my hearing and not being able to hear the tones as well the idea of dump diving seems to have an appeal. I can see gentle prodding for bottles, maybe a sifter for buttons and such then a pass with the detector. So, how do I go about finding one of these old dumps? I live in Douglasville, Georgia, west of Atlanta. Downtown Douglasville is basically unchanged from the 40s and 50s but they get really upset when you try to pull a plug out of the grass along the parade route and train track. And more than 10 people in uniform come flying if they see you in the park with a metal detector and no one can save you if they catch you in the school grounds with a digging bayonet or any other tool. I know there are class rings out there, just not how to get them without going to jail. Any idea where to go to start this quest for a dump?
