Jeter SP RC - PSA 9 vs. BGS 9 - Huge Price Difference?

So I have just begun to look into this card. Wondering why there is such a huge price difference btw the PSA 9s and BGS 9s? Seems like the latter is the better buy with high subgrades, or am I missing something about this card? Of course PSAs usually command more, but this gap as of late seems big. Perhaps it's Registry driven. For the price of a PSA 9 one might as well jump up to the BGS 9.5, it seems.

  • Yes, IMO its about the Registry

This card and the jordan simply will not cross over. Crack and sub if one dares to.

Wow, PSA 9s are north of $1k now. I bought 3 of those in 2008 for $250 each and flipped them for $300 each, thinking I did awesome. If I had held on to them.... image

Perhaps people are also speculating hard now that Jeter has a shot at 4000 hits, or Rose's record. I personally think there's an infinitesimal chance, despite the awesome year he is having.

I've looked at this as well and I think the beckett subs actually badly hurt the value of this card. There is no centering to speak of, so every sp jeter gets at least a 9 here. The edges aren't generally banged up either, so another easy 9+. The surface can be tricky. Corners are the biggest gripe. Virtually every bgs 9 jeter has 8.5 corners, but gets a 9 due to the other easy subs. Very few of these would be psa 9s. Many of the cards with actual 9 corners are in 9.5 holders for the same reason.

Very keen assessment, Duff! I also couldn't help noticing when shopping through the BGS 9s how so many had one sub-9 subgrade, which made me pass. Can't even find a BGS 9 with all 9s! So it would seem that a BGS 9.5 would have all 9+ subs and thus be a choice for me alongside a PSA 9. Would probably rather the BGS in that case I think, esp if it had 9.5 corners.

Here's a BGS 9 with only 9s and higher for subgrades. Sold for $345/dlvd.

I haven't looked lately, but I remember the BGS 9 being much easier to find. PSA for whatever reason is particularly tough on this card, so if you're going to invest, I'd go all out for the PSA 9

I don't know if there is a baseball card getting more attention than this one in the hobby. It just seems to be brought up here very often and is always a hot topic

There is centering to the Jeter, but it is implied centering. Not easily seen or understood.

The biggest reason for the price discrepancy can be categorized as concern with regard to "authenticity." While not the case in all high grade BGS SP Jeters, there is serious concern to many being "original" edges. Read that however you want, but I've seen my share and doubt that many would pass muster with PSA.

I've had pack fresh cards rejected from PSA as EOT and MINSIZE while I've seen butchered cards residing in the heavy armor of a BGS holder. I'm not saying that PSA is tougher on the merits of the card, but I think they are a little more prudent and/or cautious with regard to encapsulating this card in PSA 9 or higher...
