Have you ever?--Scans Added

I purchased a couple cards last night, that were quite expensive. As a result, I deleted almost 100 cards from my registry this morning that I will need to sell to cover the purchase of these two cards. I am going to have to gut just about everything, including all my cello's with stars, Post War HOF Auto's, players sets, etc. Has anyone ever made a similar decision? If so, in looking back, is it something you regret, glad you did, other?

Thanks in advance for responses.

  • I once sold my '64 Topps Clemente PSA 8.5, and looking back it was the best damn decision I ever made. That should definitely be one of the cards you sell. image

Edited to add: Ummmmm, provided that you happen to have one, of course.

so you're selling the farm to buy a castle.

    buy another farm. image

i've never had the opportunity to do such a thing, but i suppose i would if i could.

presumably, the items you wish to sell can be replaced and the urgency to purchase the valuable cards is well-intended.

so, what are these cards, hmmm? image

It's all about specifics of what you acquired and what you are giving up "in trade" so to speak.

I put it on paper and take a hard look; biggest factors are enjoyment and ease of replacement.
  • I have never pulled that triger, but have thought about it before. Tuff decission!

If you are going to sell those beautiful HOF rookies, I hope you give us first crack at them. I know you got some really high quality, well centered rookies!

Great analogy. What would be a good "castle" to sell the farm for?
I'm building a 1968 and a 1970 Topps set. I have lots of 1970s and 1960s to offer in trade.
  • .....really, really loved a woman?

Sorry, that's (sadly) the first thing that came to mind when i read the title.

So, what are ya getting? is HAD to be pre-war image

    cant wait to see 'em!

as for selling. at the end of the day, they are just "things". we all have "things". sometimes we want other things, so some things have to go to get the new things.

I have been doing that all year and it has been a great decision. I struggled with it for awhile, but now I am so glad I did it. I found stuff I didn't even know I had just sitting in boxes. After awhile a good purge is worth it. Now let's see a scan.

So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts

Everyone has done this. We've all sold/traded/bought many times, but perhaps not too many have sold a large portion of their collection just to get a few high end cards.
I think most gradually build their way up. You just went all in. Nice cards.

Very nice cards Matt. If they interest you more then what you'll be selling that's all that matters. So let the sale begin!!! I need to buy something.

    Matt....great stuff there...

You need to do what makes you the most happy. If it's me, I don't gut my collection but go with a Mantle like this one...

My curiosity was piqued by your initial post, but after seeing the acquisitions I honestly forgot about the dilemma. Addition by subtraction, my friend......those cards are off the hook.

you'll never be able to outrun a bad diet

  • What where some of the gems that you gave up for that?

  • Matt, the 56 Mantle is my favorite with 59 being my 2nd but that Joe D is sexy and he knows it!! The centering is out of this world.

Wow...you've got some great stuff there.

Over the past few months, I have been consolidating my collection. I am by no means a heavy hitter, but in all honesty, I want *good* Syracuse basketball season tickets. I have sat in the upper tank in previous years for my season tickets, then got rid of them altogether, and now want good seats. In order to do so, I had to let part of my collection go. Season tickets go on sale on Monday morning. I will let you guys know come March if this was a good decision or not.
