. after reading the responses, i finally remembered my exact answer to this question:
the most important thing i've learned about being a member here is that the reasons i looked so forward for so long to joining and becoming an active member turned out to be true and that joining and
putting in the hours in fact turned out to yield much more than i put in despite my sincerest efforts to contribute more than i get and that is sayin' something.
If I have a thought or question there is no need to start a new thread. First Check out the search button. Chances are, the topic has been examined at length before.
After a long spell of inactivity, I joined the forum and asked why my Mercury Dime set had this liquid looking green stuff on them - I was advised that it was PVC caused by the album type they were housed in and what I should do about it. I know now that it saved my set from serious damage. Of course, that was just the first thing that popped into my mind, there have been amny other useful items I've gained from this group and for that I thank you all! I might have even conributed a time or two. Pete

I've learned that it is very important to understand this hobby has rules and you better follow them and dont try to be a maverick - OR ELSE !! you will get toasted!
That coin people would do great moonlighting as science fiction or conspiracy theory writers.

I think I've learned several things: Be respectful, appreciative, and thankful and I think that most members here will go out of their way to educate and give their honest opinions about whatever question I may have in the hobby or my collection, and that has made me a more knowledgeable collector as a whole. You always learn something new everyday in this hobby and when the day comes that I haven't, I will call it quits. Hopefully that day will never come.

This forum was a conduit to friendships that offered much wisdom about the hobby, but beyond.
The wonderful thing about hobbies is that you come to know people from an astounding array of life's variegation, whom you would never have the opportunity to otherwise know.
That when I first joined here, coin collectors had a lot more fun kidding around with one another...it was like a big family that exchanged information with out hesitation. Some coin threads/topics took on a life of their own, oh how I long for those days.

Yeah, it does seem like folks have their top button and their tie tied a bit too tight don't it? BTW, I've learned a lot around here. And some things I've learned I'd be banned if I put it in print.

On the minus side: I've learned that there are some large egos/attitudes, some belonging to people who really shouldn't have said attitudes. I've learned that any opinion expressed here will be dissected 18 different ways, so be sure to have your stuff together before posting. I've learned that all dealers are evil... except for the ones that particular poster has a relationship with. I've learned that in numismatics as it is with romance, those who talk it the most usually do it the least. I've learned that Kool Aid and common sense don't always mix.
On the plus side: I've learned that there are some very intelligent people who post here. I've learned that there are some excellent collections formed by people who have great expertise in their area, and they should be proud of what they have. I've learned that despite 40+ years in the hobby and almost 30 in the business, I still have a lot to learn. I've learned that although there's the occasional squabbling, etc., almost everyone here seems to have some level of respect for one another. I've learned that at the end of the day, most of those here care about the hobby and want it to continue for generations to come.

An excellent list that I agree with, telephoto1. My sympathies for the loss of your mom -- mine also passed this year, born in 1928.
I have relearned to step back and think first. I'm learning to stop overestimating certain folks. I'm learning most of my "friends" have been taking advantage of me in business - I let this happen. I am learning to trust my instincts. I am learning to say "NO". I learned a great deal, not about coins, from certain folks in here who can be counted on one hand more or less. Thank you.
I've learned that theres a wealth of knowledge here and I eat it up like candy plus I've learned that I can get a better deal on quality stuff that I like off the BST than I've ever got from the Long Beach shows or even some BMS's
