If there is any way that you can post images of your coins, we might be able to identify what you are seeing. Who knows? You just might have discovered something new.
Thanks
A very good point. There were actually three different sizes of the O mint mark used on the 1848-O half dimes. In G and VG grades, maybe the OP did get the date wrong on one of the coins.
<< <i>Are you sure these are not 1848-o? Take a closer look at the dates and it may save you the trouble of posting photos.[/q

<< <i>Just so that you understand, LanceNewmanOCC was speaking a bit tongue in cheek with the image he posted. That image is from a known Chinese counterfeit half dime, and he was merely suggesting that he hoped that your coin was not also a counterfeit. >>

It looks as if your 'Micro O' 1849-O half dime might not actually be from the New Orleans Mint. In addition to the other obvious holes drilled through the coin, it appears that what looks a little like a 'Micro O' might actually be the start of another hole through the coin, but never completed. I am not aware of any mint mark punch that small at the New Orleans Mint, with 0.8 mm being the smallest used. The second coin appears to be a legitimate issue from the New Orleans Mint.
