Without trying to sound cliche, "Without pictures, this thread is useless". According to Daniel W. Valentine ("The United States Half Dimes", ANS, New York; 1931) there are just two die marriages for the 1849-O half dime, and both share the same reverse die, with a "large" O mint mark. This can be assumed to be a mint mark that is approximately 1.2 mm in height. Al Blythe, in his "The Complete Guide to Liberty Seated Half Dimes", Virginia Beach; 1992, also mentions only the same two die marriages, both with the "large" O mint mark. A quick perusal of the Collective Volumes of the Gobrecht Journal, official publication of the Liberty Seated Collectors Club, also has no mention of any 1849-O half dime with anything other than the "large" O mint mark. And in my own extensive notes, I have also never seen any 1849-O half dime other than the V1 and V2, both with the same reverse die with the "large" O.

If there is any way that you can post images of your coins, we might be able to identify what you are seeing. Who knows? You just might have discovered something new.

Are you sure these are not 1848-o? Take a closer look at the dates and it may save you the trouble of posting photos.

A very good point. There were actually three different sizes of the O mint mark used on the 1848-O half dimes. In G and VG grades, maybe the OP did get the date wrong on one of the coins.

Can't wait to see the photos then. A newly discovered die marriage of 1849-o would be a sight to see. The 1849-o dime does have variations in mint mark size, so why not the half dime too?

Just so that you understand, LanceNewmanOCC was speaking a bit tongue in cheek with the image he posted. That image is from a known Chinese counterfeit half dime, and he was merely suggesting that he hoped that your coin was not also a counterfeit.

I think I have a micro O and a large O but it sounds like I don't or can't. These were formerly MS but no longer.

It looks as if your 'Micro O' 1849-O half dime might not actually be from the New Orleans Mint. In addition to the other obvious holes drilled through the coin, it appears that what looks a little like a 'Micro O' might actually be the start of another hole through the coin, but never completed. I am not aware of any mint mark punch that small at the New Orleans Mint, with 0.8 mm being the smallest used. The second coin appears to be a legitimate issue from the New Orleans Mint.

Agree with mrhalfdime...the "micro O" is damage

I will check my "micro" example closer for damage and report later.
