I've noticed a lot of PSA 10s lately that I wouldn't want to add to a PSA 8 collection. * POLL *

I've noticed both PSA 6s, 7s and 8s that have perfect centering and PSA 10s that make me scratch my head. I used to be a condition freak (read slab collector) but have realized that "eye appeal" is worth more than a numerical number on a slab. I've seen a LOT of collections that had cards in the 5-8 range that have a lot more "eye appeal" than cards in the 9-10 range. I was reviewing a PSA 10 today on eBay, pop 1 of 2, that has a slight tilt, 55/45 on front and 80/20 on back... I was also looking at an 8 that had no tilt, 50/50 on front and back. In the past, I would have purchased the PSA 10 without thought... now it's the PSA 8 for me.

I think a lot of it has to do with our stages in life...

As a child, we were happy to have ANY card. Cards made us happy.

As adults, we had to have perfection. Perfection made us happy (even if we had to rely on others to direct us to a numerical number for perfection and seduce us with our competitive nature (Registry sets)).

As we age more, we want to be happy again... so we care less about perfection and more about happiness. What made us happy; generally our childhood. As a child, I looked for centering. As I've turned the Big '50', it appears centering is what makes me happy again. A PSA 10 that has 55/45 front and 80/20 back no longer makes me happy even if the experts tell me it's a 10. A PSA 8 that has 50/50 front and back centering that may have an unseen surface issue makes me happy. image (Did you see the smile?)

Yes, to each his or her own... just thought I'd share my own. image

    RIGHT ON.

Centering is the thing for me as well. I have found-- for vintage-- that I like cards with some corner wear, some character, that look a tiny bit of their age. The perfect tens or even some nines of much older cards just don't do it for me. And it's not just that they may have been worked on. It's like women in a way; a tiny flaw sometimes is more attractive than a synthetic, unnatural, almost replicant-like perfection.

Now for 80's stuff I like it perfect. I guess the younger the card the higher my standards for physical beauty.

image That thought entered my mind when I authored this post; I'm discussing eye appeal whereas PSA grades are based on technical criteria. I'm not slamming their grades or grading; I've just come to the realization that eye appeal is more important to me than technical grade.
