Best football rookie card

If you could own one, which one would it be?
I'm building a 1968 and a 1970 Topps set. I have lots of 1970s and 1960s to offer in trade.

  • As soon as I posted I knew that one was coming. I was thinking something a little bit more realistic and able to be obtained.

I agree with the Jim Brown. I think a close second would be Johnny U. I think he is a little undervalued considering that he played in and won the biggest NFL game before Super Bowl 3 meaning the 1958 NFL championship. He also won 3 MVPs and put up superb numbers in an era that was not kind to passing.

I agree that football is grossly undervalued when compared to baseball. I would also put the 57 Unitas in my top 5 along with Walter Payton. However, I know this technically isnt his rookie, but I would put the Grange on my list as #3 after Nagurski and Brown. Cant go wrong with the most iconic player of the early NFL...

Also, I wouldnt even put the Namath in the top ten just because he was a borderline HOF to begin with. Yes the card is a SP but if I was picking out an iconic football card, I would at least want a upper tier HOF'er. Just my opinion of course

PSA 9 of Namath or Brown Rookie.
Just love those 2 in high grade. Not the most expinsive of Football. But I would value a high grade of those 2 the most for me.

  • I agree with a lot of you. Jim Brown RC would be my first choice. Along with Unitas and Payton. I also fancy Jerry Rice's 1986 Fleer and Peyton Manning's 1998 SP Authentic. My sentimental favorite is Bernie Kosar's 1986 Topps RC. In my opinion one thing that all these cards have in common is a great picture.

Sure, he is loved so much it wasn't good enough for someone to get just one autograph on this one, it needed two. One of the odder cards in my collection.

What does frank gifford bowman large rookie go for? Back in the days of becketts .. That was the second most expensive card behind the 65 namath.

I think the top 5 football rookies are...
    1935 Chicle Bronco Nagurski
    1958 Topps Jim Brown
1965 Joe Namath (personally think he and this card are way over rated)
1957 topps Johnny Unitas (I think he is the link between vintage and super bowl era)
2000 SP Tom Brady (I hate the pats but have to admit that brady is in the conversation for greatest qb of all time. This is a base card that is limited and pretty pricey for base card from a modern set)
Scans of most of my Misc rookies can be found <a target=new class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://forums.collectors.com/m...y&keyword1=Non%20major">here
