It is just a fraction. I feel the value of this fraction is yet to be determined. The S is weaker on the hand engraved TF ones.
<< <i><<I'm aware of the SB 52 proof WQ, with the tiny S on the chest of the Eagle. There are also ones with hand engraved TF? Are they all hand engraved TF or just a fraction? Congrats on the sale.>>

Hopefully for the owners of these coins, that price will be sustainable but from my experience with "CPG" varieties, if the market for these is very narrow, then so is the relatively high prices. Once all that actually want them, have them, then it could prove very difficult to (re)sell them at the prices paid for a break even scenario.
Of course, this isn't to detract from the uniqueness of the die but it could be a harsh lesson in reality for some who hope to profit off the coin. Obviously the OP gets into the You Suck Club for his sale but I'd be surprised if these sold at that value on a consistent basis since the market appears to be fairly thin on the Washington quarter Variety front.
Proof or Not, once the demand is fulfilled, then the market disappears rather quickly. The real trick is in expanding the collector base of these variety coins which in-turn creates a sustainable market price.
Just ask Tommy about his success ratio in reselling some of the Superbird Cameo coins he's purchased over the years.
Congrats to the OP for the sale.

Now now Herb. I was going to snag these two for pennies on the dollar!

I agree...I have been promoting these for the past 2 years, I also noticed awhile ago that the top 5 registry sets, DO NOT include these varieties. I have never even seen those top 5 promoting there sets and trying to get others interested in these. Right now is the perfect time for anyone to start a set of these, most of the DDO and DDR are still out there waiting to be found. This is what makes collecting these so much fun, when you can find an example for 30 bucks and add it to YOUR set. I am still alittle bummed that I sold my 1953 ETF, Because it was really never about the money for me as I am BUILDING a SET. Since selling the 53 I have NOT been able to find another example. Take the 1956 Die gouge reverse, I just picked off one in proof 67 for 40 bucks in a anacs slab, it crossed over to a 66. Now on the dealers website they want 700 bucks for the 66. So it cost me about 90 bucks total and it will stay in my set. My 1952 ETF that I got from Illini (mike) I did NOT want to sell because of my addiction to the Superbirds and the fact I really thought the 52 would be rarer than the 53. I was wrong, there will be more 1952 because of the fact that more people bought into the Superbird than did with the 53 proof, so there are more examples out there waiting to be picked off. Buy Low sell high is nice but for some of us it is about putting a set together and NOT spending every last dime. In the end one must collect what they like, but to me anyone looking for these can find them if they put in the time. I still have 2 examples of the 67 Cameo Superbird, there are only 17 examples in cameo 67 with one higher graded. Now the price guide dropped from 1500 to 800 in one click from our host, I still have less into these than 800 each so I really can:t say I will lose money selling. I have learned that sometimes you have to sell at the right time, but again if your really a collector of these and you can get them for cheap why sell? My goal is top 5 in the registry. The fun of finding these in the raw is worth more to me than the money. Enjoy tom

It has been said that the truncated S and the the adding of the tailfeather lines is a result of a worn die. Yet we are seeing some very high grades in the case of the truncated S with hand re-engraved tail feathers.
<< <i>I don't know if I mentioned this before or not. I am beginning to suspect that there are two 1952 S proof dies with the S and truncated S.

I agree with you, I am still having a hard time wrapping this around my head, Like you if these dies were done to enhance the tail feathers because the dies were wore out, than why would we be seeing Proof 67. And even the 66's that showed up on the 1953 is amazing to me. But if they had more than 1 die with the S on it and added the tailfeathers to the newer die, that might explain why the grades are high. I am also studying the 57 d and I just cannot understand the difference I have found in the tailfeathers. I have yet to find one example with the ETF and have now looked at 1000"s of these and have noticed differences in the space between the tailfeathers. Plus the fact that some leafs go into the tail feathers and some don't. You have opened my eyes to the amount of dies that they must go thru when they were producing these, and thats why I need more examples to compare them to each other. I would love to see if all those lines are matching up on each of these coins that have been found. Its all interesting to me and keeps me on the hunt...............

Strong opening bid in the 66CAM.
Funny, Teletrade does not state that the coin is a Superbird in the coin title and the coin is not attributed as a Superbird BUT the Market Price Guide in the listing quotes Superbird Prices.
I thought they couldn't do that?
