Vending box vs regular wax box

Does anyone have any thoughts about buying vending boxes vs wax boxes? I'm specifically interested in the condition of the cards that you pulled. I would think that vending boxes wouldn't have as many stained cards. However, I'd be concerned that the corners would take more abuse because of the way they sit in the vending box. I could be wrong though because I've never bought one.

Does anyone have any success stories or horror stories that they would be willing to share?

Thanks

I have read several times that wax is the way to go. Vending won't have "gum cards" or "wax cards", but vending can give you a whole bunch of nothing as well. I am also wondering with PSA's new love affair with "min size req" if you could get creamed with grades on vending as I have heard that vending is cut differently.

Either way it's like the lottery.

  • Rack if you can find them, wax if the gum hasn't bled, cello if the wrappers ren't too tight and finally vending. I've purchased a few boxes and didn't do so well on the 1980 Topps box but the only card that mattered looks like it has a shot at a 9.

I recommend wax as well...despite the gum and wax stains (sometimes there are neither, too, if gum hasn't stuck to card and wax can be taken off by nylon), I find wax to be a great souce of high grade cards. Vending is hit or miss by comparison and if it's miss, it's rough going.

An alternate point of view. I think the price of vending is very appealing. Especially if it's a case fresh box.

I was just going to say this. Also, I've had pretty good luck with Vending. The thing is, you can pull a lot of great cards in a Vending box. I purchased a 78 Topps FB vending about a year ago and pulled 4 Stallworth and 3 Franco Harris but zero Dorsett's. Condition was better than the many wax packs I had purchased around the same time, however, I've noticed in vending that if you get a box in which the first few cards are MC or OC to some extent, it seems as though the rest of the box follows suit.

I feel like it's a little more risky to buy vending, but it also has a bigger potential pay off. Just my .02.

A few years ago I bought a 78 Vending box and landed a slew of 8s and 9s, about an equal amount. But alas, no 10s.
