Silver, and a commem, found in a roll of half dollars. . . .

A collector friend of mine picked up a roll of half dollars
at his local bank last week, and hit a small jackpot.
He found a couple silver coins, including a Proof
1982 George Washington commemorative half.

I searched $100 worth of half-dollar rolls a few months
ago, and didn't find anything worthwhile other than
a few older Kennedy dates in nice Mint State ---
neat coins, but not really worth saving.

His good luck makes me want to get a few more
rolls to search. . . .

I've searched tons of boxes in the past with hopes of one day stumbling upon a commem, but alas no luck.

I do know of others, however, who have found the 1986 Statue of Liberty commems (most common), along with GWC, BTW, the George Washington commem you've mentioned, and probably a few others I can't think of. They're out there.
  • Never turned up a commem in a roll, but I've been on a good run with 40% Kennedys lately. Been averaging almost one per roll over the last two months. I tend to pull around $200 in rolls every week and cycle them back through the bank (keeping a few for tips and change, just for the looks), which makes it even more of a good run. Somebody locally must have changed in a BIG hoard of halves to have that many fresh rolls even at the tellers.

Haven't turned up too many 90% lately though. Seems to be down to about one every twenty or thirty rolls anymore, at best. Last one was a Franklin though. image

  • nice! Finding commems is always a nice surprise. I've found a Stone Mountain, Washington-Carver, Statue of Liberty and a 1993 WWII clad commem. Unless you hit the jackpot with a large haul or something old, I think finding a commem is one of the most exciting things in searching halves.
  • Hello,

My best, and only commemorative found in a roll was a Iowa Statehood half.

I have also found a Half Balboa.

I just ordered a box of halves and should be able to pick it up in ten days.

I still call my accumulation my collection!
  • Somebody must have raided their collection for funds this weekend...

Got 17 rolls of half dollars from the bank on Saturday just before closing and turned up a roll each of 2012P and D. Not familiar enough with the current mint wrappers to know if they're mint wrapped or just re-wrapped from mint bags. Rest of the rolls yielded only a really worn 1965 and 1966, along with a few mid 1990 dates in unc.

40 rolls of cents turned out almost two rolls of wheats. Oldest was a '37. 10 rolls of dimes produced 12 silvers, all well worn 1960's dates.

Now, to re-roll all the leftovers for a trip back and another run image

ran into my roll searching competition at the bank one day.

he told me he found classic commem (I forgot which) in a roll.

as usual, my comment is: I've never found anything so nice. image

My odd find once was a dark chocolate brown French 10 centime bronze dated 1917.....VF at best; likely a WWI memento returned to our shores long ago as a Froggish curiosity.
