Another crazy PL 1996-D Washie!

morgansforevermorgansforever Posts: 8,487 ✭✭✭✭✭
Couldn't wait to get home to shoot it. I knew I had another 96 mint set with a PL Washie.
Don't know if it's truly PL, NGC will have to decide. Sure wish our host would PL this badboy.
All I thought about today at work was shooting this piece. This one is a bit cleaner that the other I posted yesterday.
NGC census, 1 1996-D in PL.
Here it is! Thoughts.............

EDIT: The best pic I could generate, gobs of luster and reflectivity going on image

Thanks Dog image Not only is it blazin, I can also clearly read the text in my RB, right off the surface.

EDIT: Why doesn't PCGS use the designation PL or DMPL on business strike coinage?

I do, but got caught up in the 96W Rosie, which came in the 96mint sets.
So I have a ridiculous amount of 96 mint sets, I mean ridiculous image

If I find any '96 mint sets I'll be sure to think of you and look inside image

I've got a stack of US mint sets but I don't remember any '96 ... Who knows maybe there's a BST in our future.

The rims almost look squared and knife edged as well.

This is almost typical for PL's since the late '80's. A few of these are simply extremely PL.

Very nice. Did know these even existed. So can this one be called a First Strike?

    No, almost certainly not.

Very early strikes show tiny die flaws and tend to have a little less luster even on PL's.

This one appears to be at least 100 coins into the dies' run.

I really wish PCGS would designate PL or DMPL for business strike coinage.
Text can be read off of the surface clearly, not blurry, not almost, clear as day.
The other isn't as clean but has the deep mirrors. NGC has graded 1 1996D in PL.

From ATS, someone else posted it.

Just a bit of information from the NGC census

NGC has graded 139,321 Washington Quarters dated from 1932-1998 (Eagle Back WQs).

Of those, NGC has designated 197 (0.14% or one out of about every 700 graded) as "PL" and a single coin as "DPL" -- the DPL is a 1992-D quarter.

The "PL" list is below, sorted from most graded PL to least graded PL:

    1998 D (40 coins)
    1990 P (38 coins)
    1947 S (21 coins)
    1972 D (19 coins)
    1991 P (14 coins)
    1989 P (10 coins)
    1993 P (9 coins)
    1950 S (5 coins)
    1992 P (5 coins)
    1992 D (4 coins)
    1946 S (3 coins)
    1968 (3 coins)
    1972 (3 coins)
    1989 D (3 coins)
    1948 S (2 coins)
    1964 D (2 coins)
    1968 D (2 coins)
    1987 P (2 coins)
    1993 D (2 coins)
    1995 P (2 coins)
    1943 S (1 coins)
    1969 D (1 coins)
    1971 D (1 coins)
    1988 P (1 coins)
    1994 D (1 coins)
    1994 P (1 coins)
    1996 D (1 coins)
    1997 D (1 coins)

So what you're saying is, FS's are typically not the most attractive coins? With all the FS buyers and premiums these days I'm just loving this image
