Greatest offensive baseball player of All-Time?

Everyone has their opinion on who the greatest offensive baseball player of all-time is...(Ruth, Mantle, Mays, etc.), but everytime I think of this topic, I always think of Hank Aaron. Yeah, he's the all-time leader in homeruns and that's what MOST people ONLY think of when they think of Hank. But, this guy did A TON more than just hits homeruns. He stole bases, he hit over .300 many times, inlcuding over .330 plenty of times. • I don't know if there is a "greatest offensive player of all time" There are many good ones, including Willams and Mantle, Dimaggio and Rose, and of course Aaron and Bonds. You have to take into account that baseball has changed from era to era, and there are stand out players in each generation. I do think there are a few true stand outs.

My top three offensive players of all time are, in no particular order:

    Pete Rose
    Ted Williams
Ken Griffey Jr, and yes, he will break Aaron's record when he finally becomes healthy again image
  • After a lot of careful consideration, I must choose Kevin Maas.

    Babe Ruth

    Lifetime Stats:
    Games 2503
    AB 8399
    BA .342
    Hits 2873
    HR 714
    RBI 2213
    Runs 2873
    On Base % .474
    Slugging % .690

A bit better than Hank image... the Babe had about 4,000 less at bats than Hank, many of which he lost when he was a premier pitcher between 1915 and 1919...

  • Ok, stats on Williams:

    Games - 2,292
    AB - 7,706
    Runs - 1,798
    Hits - 2,654
    Homeruns - 521
    RBI's - 1,839
    Average - .344
    On base% - .483
    Slugging % - .634

He led both leagues in HR's in '41 and '42 (he also led the AL in '47 and '49)
Led both leagues in BA in '41, '42, and '57 (he also led the AL in '47, '48, and '58)
Led both leagues in RBI in '39, '42, and '49 (he also led the AL in '47)
Triple crown in '42 and AL triple crown in '47 (he missed it in both leagues in '41 by 5 RBI and missed it in the AL in '49 by less than .001 (George Kell got the batting title while both are listed at .343)
    Led both leagues in slugging% in '41, '42, '46 (he led the AL in '47, '48, '49, '51, '54)
    Led both leagues in On Base% in '40, '41, '42, '46, '47, '48, '49, '51, '54, '56, '57, and '58
    Led both leagues in BB in '41, '42, '46, '47, '49, '51, '54 (he led the AL in '48)

    All time On Base% leader
    #3 All time BB leader
#12 All time HR, RBI, and HR%
    #14 All time R

The all time stats aren't bad but, then consider he missed '43, '44, '45, almost all of '52 and most of '53 while in the Marines. If you replaced those 5 years with his average year, he'd come out at the top of all but HR in a 22 year career.

It doesn't have anything to do with the above but, how about a quote:

"If I was being paid thirty-thousand dollars a year, the very least I could do was hit four-hundred." - Ted Williams

Hmmm, if only a few current players would go adhere to that...

Kevin Maas? LOL. His '91 Stadium Club was going for $10-15 everywhere. Good thing I dumped them off (whew). Although I also sold my
'89 Upper Deck Griffey's to the same guy when it only booked for $12 (4 of them - doh!!!). Sometimes you win, but sometimes you lose big.

Oops, and my reply to the thread would be George (Ruth). The guy did it all in an era when players were tough and a pitcher wasn't afraid
to toss it inside and bean someones arse. Doink***. It's kind of like the Gretzky/Howe debate. Howe played when there was only a few teams with the best players and scoring was near impossible. Although I think Gretzky was awesome, he did put up many of his numbers
    during the defenseless 80's.

i absolutely HATE when people compare Barry Bonds to Babe Ruth... Bonds is damn good, but he is no Babe Ruth... older players, like Ruth, Aaron, Cobb, Mantle, DiMaggio, Mays, they invented this game... they set the precident for all these players today... it's hard to claim a player is the "greatest of all time"... i feel that happens VERY rarely, in such instances as Michael Jordan in basketball, and maybe eventually, Tiger Woods in golf... sports like football and baseball have so many players that play so many positions, it's hard to pinpoint ONE that's 'the best'... baseball was much different back then than it was today... the game has changed and i don't believe u can compare past players to present players... there are MANY GREAT players, but i don't think one stands out among any other... #'s can mean a lot (such as in Bonds case), but u gotta look at championships (also, such as in Bonds case)... it's the whole package, and i don't believe there's ONE greatest...

  • After careful consideration my list of the Greatest "offensive" plavers ever:

    Albert "spit on people" Belle
Jose "beat my wife, dive fast with gun, doing Madonna" Canseco
Steve "8 time cocaine offender" Howe
Roberto "spit in your eye" Alomar
    John "the racist" Rocker

I'd say overall I'd give it to: Steve Howe - the greatest offensive player ever for me.

    Peace be to my brothers,
    Leon
