For sale: Spanish Philippines 80 Reaux Essai -- dated 1859 -- struck in bronze -- PCGS SP60RB
This little pattern or essai was struck in Paris as part of a series of proposed 20, 40, & 80 Reales (Reaux in French) gold coins. They were never issued and only the essais survive.
While the 80R seems to be the more common of the 3 denominations, there are actually 2 completely different dies used on the date side of the 80R coin making 2 very distinct varieties.
This coin has no verdigris or carbon spotting as is often seen on these coins. It does have some hairlining accounting for the grade.
