OT: Personal Best .... updated on page 2 as lobster season just opened

ctf_error_coinsctf_error_coins Posts: 15,433 ✭✭✭✭✭
To my friends here and to keep this coin related:
image
I have caught a mackerel on the above before, just not today......

So I launch before sunrise in beautiful La Jolla today ...... and tried to catch squid for bait to no avail. Then I tried to catch some bait fish and ended up catching a nice size mackerel. I tail hook it and fly line it around for a little while. And then slam .... I know I have a nice size FISH ON. After a few minutes of fighting the fish, it comes to the surface and it is a nice sized White Seabass , Yes !!!!!!! .... I was extremely excited.......

I ask another kayak fisherman nearby if he has a gaff and says yes and start to paddle over. He set up and takes a swing with the gaff and fails ...... Then ..........

......... a Big effing seal comes by and grabs the WSB and goes straight down. You should have heard the curse words coming out of my mouth .... lol ....

so I fight the seal for 10 to 30 seconds and he lets lose and I crank the fish to the kayak and grab him by the gill plate and yank him aboard .....image

I bought the kayak with coin money a year ago and trhis is my personal best to date. 37 inch WSB

    Nice fish! image

Thankfully, it doesn't look like the seal did much damage.

As I've said before, I'm extremely jealous. And this just continues to justify that jealousy. Awesome.

    Indeed !!!!

    It will taste fantastic.

I'm surprised that dollar coin on your fishing lure hasn't toned more considering magnesium brass is a highly reactive metal.

Thanks guys ... both the above get the same response .... I just turn 50 and I have lived here my whole life, BUT, I just started doing this a year ago (dang why not 30 yrs ago). I have ALWAYS traveled AWAY from San Diego to get away .... lol

I finally figured out that some of the best kayak fishing in the States is right here in San Diego, I think I found a great midlife crisis.

So have I many times. In fact I want to right now if I can find someone to go out on a party boat with as they are catching everything right now down south.

I do want to buy a Hobie as you can peddle with your legs and have hands free.

Great story! and best of all, it's true! Makes me think of the times I have lost meal size walleye to a fresh water shark (northern pike) during a spin casting retrieval. I've even landed a few pike that refused to release the walleye while it was on my tackle. imageimage

Years ago it was common to shoot seals and sharks that attempted to steal hooked fish. I was on a tuna boat back in the 1970s and remember one of the mates shooting a greedy hammerhead shark with an M1 Garand. You can't imagine how many times I've see another fisherman reel in an albacore head bitten off just behind the gill plates.

Due to federal protection, the seals now lounge in the sun on the La Jolla beach without fear of humans. People come to the cove and take photos of the lazy seals.

Awesome fish. Kayak fishing is becoming very popular around these parts (SE Ga coast).

We have Black Sea Bass and Spottail Bass (Red Drum) around here. The Black Sea Bass are on the "endangered watch list" but you can't go Sheepshead fishing for the BSB eating you fiddler crab off before it hits the bottom.

The peddle kayak sounds like it may be more benefit to keep your hands free. Nice setup you got there.

Yes it is a budding industry that seems to be really starting to grow. It is way fun and challenging.

We also have BSB and I have seen many photos of kayakers who caught (and released) them in La Jolla, they are huge fish. They are such a good fish that they were waaaay overfished and thus the protection.

Check out this link to historic giant BSB photos ..

Your kayak reminds me of a joke I heard on the radio yesterday:

What's the difference between a canoe and a Canadian?

    A canoe might tip!

I've had that happen several times as well. Once a 12-pound northern took a 2-pound northern I was reeling in right next to the boat. I had to wait 10 minutes for the big fish to ingest the small one before reeling in both fish.

They look like overgrown red roaches without the claws.

I'm going to hookup to some spottails, trout, and flounder this weekend down here on the Ga coast. I'd rather use those lobsters for bait instead of the other way around. image

Thank you. It is amazing how versatile the kayak is. I bought it for photography but soon learned that the yak I bought is one of the best fishing (paddle style) kayaks on the market.

My 6 pole fishing set up also has a live bait tank and it is easy to catch live squid and live macks for bait.

It only take a few minutes to convert the yak to go lobster hoop netting with 5 hoops.

It is a very inexpensive sport, especially once you have all the gear, all I pay for now is gas to the launch site and bait & tackle.
