Jonesing To Buy Something...

I want to buy a card. Something awesome.

Suggestions?

Something pre-war to 70's that will hold value well over time.

Nothing shiny.

I feel like the hunt and purchase of this soon-to-be-existent card could very well cure this apocalyptic hangover.

I like Mantles. 54B. 52B. Not really 55B because it doesn't look like The Mick to me in that photo.

Maybe 56 Clemente? Don't have any Clementes in the PC yet.

Or Mays. Yeah, I need a Mays. 51B? 52T?

Budget: I think ideally 1-2K. Depends on the card. Centering is prime factor.

What's out there? Slim pickings on the bay.

Need food now. Food good.

If I were into baseball, I'd go with a T206 or T205 Cobb.

Yeah, man. Where are the really premium cards at?

    Star Jordan XRC?

Rick has a quite shockingly well-centered 57 Mantle #95 up right now.

A centered 52T Berra would be nice, even in lower grade.

Pre-war rookie cards of Hall of Famers seem very undervalued.

You could probably pick up a bunch of cards with your budget.

Me, too Matty C. I want to get something really nice and high end, but more modern. 60's through 70's. I got the Molitor in the Dmitri Young auction and would like something along those lines. Been looking at a PSA 9 Bradshaw RC on eBay and salivating

So thinking of spending the day hunting the planet for one of:

    1. Clemente RC
    2. Mays RC or 52T
    3. Cobb T206 (batt off or red portrait)
    4. Mantle 52B or 54B
    5. Bird/Magic PSA 9 but a REAL clean example
    6. Jordan Star BGS
    7. 52T Berra
    8. 1932 Caramel Gehrig

    Open to other suggestions.

I love the fleer Jordan rc just because psa grades them. Star/Bgs grading has always scared me.

I second the Ty Cobb Green Portrait or maybe a real nice 1952 Topps Campanella
  • MattyCMattyC Posts: 1,335 ✭✭
So how would we rank these? I guess main factor should be holding value long term, followed closely by hobby significance.

I'm not too up on the Cobbs: what is the diff btw the red and green portrait, and the two portraits versus the batt off shoulder?

Green is the most famous and rare of all 4 T206 cobbs. Its gone up the most of the 4 as well

here are some suggestions: i think these fit your wants and i believe are special cards for all ages....and future

    1) 1959 Fleer Ted Williams #70 featuring Ted Williams & Jim Thorpe (two great Americans) in PSA 9 grade
    2) 1964 Philly Gum NFL "Packers Team Play" featuring the first appearance of Vince Lombardi in PSA 9
    3) 1952 Bowman Mantle in grade 7-8, which is undervalued imo
    4) 1972 Staubach Rookie in psa 8.5 (prices are starting to get crazy on his 8+)
    5) 1958 Roy Campanella's "Symbol of Courage" in 8+ (very tough card)
    6) 1958 Maris Rookie (Still the HR king for single season record imo) in PSA 8+
    7) 1954 Aaron Rookie (Ditto-still the Hr King)in 6-7 grade
    8) Psa 10 Topps Tiffany rookies of Maddux, Griffey Jr., Chipper, Randy Johson, & Mattingly
    9) Pete Rose rookies in 7+
10)Modern Card; 1997 Topps Chrome Refractor Tim Duncan PSA 10; the man can no longer be ingnored for his accomplishments...should be outselling all current NBA stars...sad that he is not....

    good luck! my two cents...
  • MattyCMattyC Posts: 1,335 ✭✭
Thx. The 52B Mick is and has been HIGH on my list. Been looking for the best 7 or even 6 around. No luck lately.

Gotta add MARIS RC to the list in PSA 7 or 8 for sure. Forgot that.

Let's talk about that Cobb RC. Am not too familiar with that issue. Pretty cool, no? Is it considered his undisputed RC, and how does it stack up against the T206s?

I'm diggin' the love for Campanella in this thread so far. image

I would have to add the '54 Wilson Franks Campy to the mix. IMHO it's one of the greatest cards ever made.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe the E102 is actually a 1909 issue. I could be wrong though because there are a few similar looking e-cards with that pose. Regarding the T206's. The green portrait is the most valuable of the four poses. The green cobb was issued from 1909 to 1910 with a handfull of different backs and is very difficult to find centered. The red is considered the most common because it was a super print and can be found with the many different backs. It was issued from 1910 - 1911. But that does not mean it's easy to find with nice eye appeal. The red cobb is often found out of focus and off centered. It took me a while to find one that was centered with perfect focus and a nice red background. Both are highly desirable. I think the T206's will only increase in value. More and more people are gravitating towards prewar and the T206 is where most seem to start out. I hope this helps. Good luck to you.

This thread is why talking shop with fellow collectors before shopping for something is really great; I've already been turned on to some issues I had been sleeping on bigtime.

This green portrait Cobb seems like a great fit for the collection, the more I am learning about it. I still need to bone up on that "RC" that was mentioned as well.

Here are some famous players who are glaringly absent from my collection, along with the card I think I should get for them (if undecided btw two or more it is noted) :

    Mays 51RC or 52T?
Maris RC or 61 or 62?
Cobb - Looks like this Green Portrait is the one
Cy Young - I assume T206 hand shows?
    Clemente - RC
    Bird/Magic - RC
    Campanella
    Snider
    Whitey Ford - 51B RC
    Eddie Murray - RC
    Wagner

I have Berra, Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio, and Mantle represented but am always interested in new cards of them: specifically as of late I've been eyeing the Gehrig Caramel. Curious to hear how these rank among the guys here. Gonna comb the bay and see if I can dig any candidates up. Hangover is pretty biblical and cards plus Carl's Jr. or In-N-Out burger seem to be the move.

Matty, I have 3 Bird/Magic RC's PSA 9's. I am keeping one and at some point will likely sell the other 2. Was thinking of doing the consignment thing, but PM me if that's a route you'd like to take

Okay I really think Cobb has gotta join the PC; loving this green portrait. What do we all think of the 3.5 listed by PWCC? Not too many strong candidates centering wise. Will keep this one in the 3K range max.

Of the players I don't have a card of, I'm thinking Cobb, Mays, and Clemente should be the first slots to get filled...

    1954 Bowman Ted Williams

Unfortunately there aren't any pretty ones on ebay now.
  • MattyCMattyC Posts: 1,335 ✭✭
Williams was my last purchase actually; it came down to a choice between the 54B, the RC, and the Wilson Franks. The latter won out in the end over the 54B. Both are great cards.
  • ToneDToneD Posts: 281 ✭✭✭
That green Cobb PSA 3.5 in PWCC auction is nice. It is such a difficult card to find centered that it might take a while to find a better centered example. You really can't go wrong with a T206 green Cobb. In regards to a T206 Cy Young. I like the portrait the best. It would go great with the green cobb. After the portrait I do like the glove shows better than the bare hand. Again, you can't go wrong with a T206 Young.
  • handymanhandyman Posts: 5,388 ✭✭✭✭✭
The cobb green is almost always oc tb. So dont worry about that. Great choice on the Green Cobb. it will always go up.
    Great choice!!

This one looks better than the grade given to me.

I saw that one, but if I can snag one with no creasing, cool. Curious: in the pantheon of Cobb cards how does the Cracker Jack compare to the Green Portrait?

Edit THANKS for the VCP data on the Green, Handy, was just gonna look that up.
  • ToneDToneD Posts: 281 ✭✭✭
a '14 or '15 CJ Cobb will be more expensive with the '14 CJ more expensive than a '15. In terms of investment, I feel a CJ Cobb will outperform a T206 green cobb.

Edit: Handyman summed it up nicely regarding relative condition.
  • handymanhandyman Posts: 5,388 ✭✭✭✭✭
The 1915 carcker jack is a beast. Id go for that one at a tie depending on condition. The green you will be able to get a 3-4 range card as to the 1915 Cracker Cobb you would be lucky to get a Low grade PSA 1. So if condition is an issue with eye appeal. The Green will be your card then.
I personaly have one that I got from my brother a long time ago in a trade so Ive been checking up on the Green for a long time/ price wise. It has gone up consitantly over the years. In 2004 you could have gotten a PSA 3 for around 800 or so. Now they are 1600.00 . You wont go wrong with this card and the higher grade you can get the better it will be. I sugest getting a 3 grade if you can spend the money. a 4 Would be even better but a nice 3 you cant go wrong.
People hold on to these and dont offer them as much as they do the other 3 cobbs from the T206 set as well.
At worst this card will hold its value. So you will always be able to get your money back out of this card I feel. You cant make that claim in real estate image . If these do fall in value these are on a lot of peoples list and it will go back up.

Here is a pic of mine. This card will never be sold by me. My kids better not sell it. Ill put that in the will. image

Consider the 1933 Sport Kings cards. The colors are amazing and they are very tough to find in good condition.

Cobb in a PSA 5 runs you a little over $1000 and the Ruth is a little more. the Babe Didrickson is actually very tough and there are two up on ebay right now I think. Try finding that card in just about any grade.

I think the 1958 Topps Football Jimmy Brown RC should be added to your collection. I also really like the 1969 Topps Basketball Lew Alcindor RC. Both have lost some steam but many still consider both as best ever in their sports.
