Looks like the "hype" is over on the 79 Stargell!

At least in 7!

Recently ended on Ebay

The last one on Ebay went for over $40 if I am remembering right!

To me $40 for a 7 would be crazy high. That's a tough card but no 1979 Topps card is tough to find with 75-25 or better centering.

I have two ungraded 79T Baseball sets built from rack packs originating from BBCE that I need to check out cards for centering and the Stargell...
  • what did this card peak at? Are there any psa 9's or 10s that sold recently?
  • What are the other toughies in 79 Topps?

I have both an 8 and a 9 in that card. I paid around 150 for the 9.

Winfield is probably the toughest star aside from Stargell
273 Terrell is the toughest common with only one 9 - typically covered in print flaws

  • << <i>Just saw a PSA 8 listed on eBay starting at $9.99. Will be interesting to see where that one lands. >>

WOW! Maybe the hype is starting to fade.

    Actually Eckersley (15 9s & 8 30s) is tougher than Winfield (24 9s & 114 8s) for the star category.

Terrell is the toughest all around common though, the print flaw of a black streak down the right side of the card is very consistent. I've pulled a bunch though that didn't have it, AND that had great centering ... but the surface had some vicious spots or bubbles to it ... what a bummer. Centering-wise Lemongello is the toughest common I've seen, taking second place in the all around category to Terrell IMO.

I think PSA needs to update it's '79 article, as the set isn't all about the Marc Hill - as tough of a card as that is - there are many much tougher. >>

When deciding which cards in the set are toughest, it's best to examine not just the # of 9s but the 9s in relation to total graded. Eck has 15 9s, but with only 72 total graded that's a much higher % of 9s than say, Winfield and Molitor which are closer to having only 10% of the total graded receiving 9s.

As far as the SMR article on this set, I remember when it came out the Hill was I think a pop 2 and the Landreaux was a pop 1. All of the SMR articles are out of date, since the pops change. For the 77 set article, PSA interviewed a couple collectors from that time (Phil Apostle was one) who said John candelaria was the holy grail and that Steve luebber was the toughest. While true at the time, things quickly changed. Candy man is now a relatively easy 9, and luebber is now maybe the 10th toughest only.

Agreed. THose SMR articles are ancient. Would really like to see some updates on most of the sets
