BVG VS PSA/SGC......OPINIONS ?

this topic may have popped up before but forgive me as i just had to ask.....i recently started buying graded vintage to add to my collection....I have subbed myself many to psa/sgc and been happy overall...when i go onto ebay and see clear pictures of bvg graded cards, they just seem a bit off grade to me....to my eyes, their graded cards (some, not all, but most) seem they would be a grade lower if done by psa/sgc......anyone have an opinion ??? thanks, ivan

Personally, with regard to vintage, pre-war I stick strictly with PSA and SGC and post war PSA. I won't touch BVG for anything other than the BGS modern Chome and only for the autograph subgrade.

    YMMV...

Otwcards just said it....that's all there is to be said.
  • Five years ago or so, I used to submit cards from the era I collect (50's thru '70s) to BVG. Nowadays I submit them to PSA. I did not find one company to be better than the other as far as grading accuracy. My experience is that BVG did a fine job, and I was happy with their customer service as well.

PSA graded cards from that era seem to bring consistently higher prices than their BVG counterparts, so over the last couple years I have weeded out all the BVG cards from my collection. All my vintage is now PSA graded (except for a handful of SGC graded cards in my '70 Topps baseball set).

I keep reading on this forum that BGS is the way to go when you're talking about cards manufactured in the last 20 years, give or take.

I would have to agree. I have submitted a lot of OPC hockey to PSA and had mixed results. On a recent submission, i cracked a few 80-81 OPC and went from 7 to 8. I also had two Lemiuex RCs in OPC go from 9 to MISCUT back to 9. BGS for last 20 years definitely carries a premium. I had two 87-88 Fleer Jordan's. The PSA 9 went for $120 range, where the BGS 9 went closer to $200.

I would also add, I would never buy a BGS graded OPC hockey card from the 80's that was higher than an 8.5 - PSA would not grade them. SGC have 50 / 50 on crossing over.

  • We should have a sticky thread about this topic imo.

But going back to the question my first observation is rather standard sgc for psa 40's psa 48-80 bgs 81 and up.

The younger crowd, that is more into modern cards, for some reason has arrived at a consensus that BGS is king.

It isn't so much that BGS "grades better," it's that there is a consensus in the market that BGS "is better" as far as modern cards go.

also because they grade up to 10 pristine compared to a log jam of psa 10's

BGS also gives subgrades which appeals to those who are interested in why they got the grade they did. The holders are a bit bulky for my taste, but they might be the best at protecting the cards. And I haven't seen cards that look like they are in the wrong holder. I'm talking about fakes of PSA, not referencing grades. People seem to get into these cases and switch cards.

Thats all more appealing to the shiny card crowd.

They grade differently and hit harder on modern surface issues (refractor lines, print dots, etc..).
