Shane--what would be your definition and an example of a rare card. Or definition and example of a scarce card.

Heck, it must be rare if he protects his cards like this: I also will pack the card in aluminum foil for extra protection inside the padded envelope.

I would have to think about that one. There are some things that I could rattle off on the rarest end of rare, but the more common end of the rare spectrum...I would have to think about. It's definitely not a 1987 Donruss Terry Pendleton!

Great posts guys. I got a laugh out of them!

This one is not just rare, but it's VERY, VERY, VERY RARE!

But even that can't compare to this beat to hell, National Chicle common which is so rare the seller is asking over $3,000!

Ebay really brings them out of the woodwork, doesn't it?

  • I love the Gem Mint + that is competely off centered, and the guy with the rare 1935 Chicle Tosi has been trying to sell that card for atleast two years now!!!!

Quite a bargain for a 10 GEM/MINT con. Rare card.

This card is so rare that the seller only has 7 of them available. By the time you read this, they'll probably all be gone.

    In the description he says:

Some look like they might be "rare" idk

What does that even mean? How does something look rare?

I am positive I have at least 10 of the Karl Malone Hoops cards. I really hope it is rare. I would be rich.
After those four National League games, Gorman Thomas was never the same, and neither were the Brewers, and come to think of it neither was I.

"The card has what appears as a fold line but in person it is not as noticeable"

Yeah. And if you look at it in the dark it is crease free!!

Obviously many eBay descriptions involve exaggerated hype, but what are examples of a truly "rare" card ? A "scarce" card ? A "tough" card ? A "hard" card ? Are there any real differences between such terms ?

In my opinion, it's all relative. Those terms do mean the same thing in my book.

I would also say that some collectors really have no idea what rare is. Al, I would say that you know what rare is. You and I would both agree that 1955 Topps Stamps, 1961 Topps Dice Game, and a 1955 Topps Hocus Focus Wally Moon are truly the rarest of the rare.

On the flip side, this is an example of something truly rare. These are INSANELY RARE! Although, I would disagree with him that it is the RAREST Post-War issue. It is probably on the Topps top ten list.

    1967 Topps Stand Ups

    Shane

  • bishopbishop Posts: 2,917 ✭✭✭
The 67 Stand Ups do qualify as rare in my view. As do the 55 Hocus Focus. Both more so than the 68 3Ds, which I think, at least for part of the set, also qualify as rare . But the rarest Topps issues probably are the 55 Stamps, 61 Dice, 66 Punch Outs, 70 Cloth and 71 Rookie Artists Proofs

I didn't know you had a 1955 Topps Stamp. Wow!

You ain't got an extra one of those 1966 Topps Punchout Floods laying around do ya? If so, I would gladly send you a large sum of genuine United States currency. image

Now that I think about it, I really think you just took a 1955 Topps Don Mossi and decided to make a deckle edge out of it. That's really not a stamp! image

  • bishopbishop Posts: 2,917 ✭✭✭
I am happy to have one 55 Stamp, but wish it was someone other than Mossi image
